You can't quit but if the payment schedule isn't being upheld from the contract, you should not continue at a loss. Document everything, send the proper notices and take your tools home. You don't want to have to sue to get paid.

Used to spend nights building quotes for leads that never closed:
Send estimate → wait → follow up once → get ghosted.

That cycle keeps a lot of contractors busy, but not necessarily profitable.

At Team Builders, we scaled from $2M to $10M in 4 years by tightening our sales process and building systems around communication, follow-up, and trust. No fancy software. Just lean construction principles that kept jobs moving and crews productive.

Now the sales process doesn’t rely on me personally chasing every lead. And it creates confidence before the proposal even gets presented.

Inside our Sales Masterclass, I’m breaking down the exact process we use to increase close rates, improve customer trust, and stop competing on price.

When your team has to call you for every decision, the business still runs through your head. That’s not a people problem. It’s a systems problem.

The fix starts by getting the way jobs should run out of your head and into clear handoffs, checklists, and decision rules your team can actually follow. That’s how you stop being the default answer to every issue on site.

Fuel prices don’t just hit at the pump. They start showing up inside your job costs, supplier pricing, deliveries, and margins.

The problem is a lot of quotes are built around today’s numbers, while the job gets executed on tomorrow’s costs. That gap can quietly eat profit before you notice it.

In this Tradie Tip, PFC Coach Anna Caruso breaks down how to stay ahead of rising costs instead of reacting after the damage is already done.

Your business may already have cash sitting inside it.

Accounts receivable, inventory, work in progress, and construction in progress can sometimes be used to support a line of credit, giving you access to cash without creating taxable income.

This is the kind of financial training our clients get every month inside PFC.

Not theory. Real ways to think ahead, protect cash flow, and make calmer decisions before the business feels squeezed.

If you want this level of support around your numbers, book a call with our team.

I’ve built successful businesses and still had seasons where my life felt squeezed by the calendar.

Calls everywhere. Decisions everywhere. No real space for my health, my family, or the reason I started the business in the first place.

In this episode, Coach Carol Surbey and I talk through what it takes to stop running reactive and start building structure around your time.

Because freedom is not something you wait for at the end. You have to create it while you build.

A lot of builders overcomplicate lead gen because they think it has to be ads, funnels, or some big marketing push. Sometimes the move is much simpler than that.

Get in front of the right referral partners consistently. Realtors, insurance companies, GCs, designers, property managers. Make it easy for them to remember you when the right job comes up.

The real play is consistency and proximity. Before you spend more on marketing, ask yourself: who already talks to the clients I want?

What’s the simplest thing you’ve done that actually brought in work?

You can close good jobs, keep crews moving, and still end up wondering why the numbers don’t land where you expected.

That usually isn’t one big issue. It builds from how jobs are priced from the start.

Margin and mark-up get mixed up all the time. The quote looks fine, the job sells, but the result doesn’t match the target. Over time, that gap adds up more than most people realize.

Simple check before your next quote: are you using the right mark-up to hit the margin you actually want?

I see a lot of contractors pricing jobs based on what “feels” right instead of what the business actually needs.

The problem is your markup has to support overhead, target profit, and the reality of how your company operates. Otherwise, you stay busy and still wonder where the money went at the end of the year.

In the final part of this Tradie Tip series, I break down how I calculate markup from gross profit margin so the numbers actually work in the real world. If your pricing still feels inconsistent, this will help.
