It was a privilege to address the Intercultural Dialogue Institute's (IDI) Community Table-to-Table celebration last night. This annual event represents a collaboration among the Honorable Member of Parliament, Jenna Sudds, the Ottawa Police Services, the Anatolian Heritage Foundation and the IDI. Despite icy weather, the Hall on Parliament Hill was packed.
It was a feast for the eyes and the soul---multicultural and multiage. It was a true joy!

Living longer is a triumph.

For the first time in history, millions of people are living 20-30 years longer. It's referred to as a "longevity bonus".

Living longer means we can design our lives differently than our parents and/or grandparents did. Unfortunately, however, systems, beliefs, workplaces and policies haven't kept pace.

This is why aging is often framed as a crisis.

How are you redesigning your life to take advantage of your longevity bonus?

Spoiler alert=> Today's longer lives will require working and learning longer. The 20th century paradigm "learn, earn, retire" is out!

Norms need to change:
 No more front-end loading of education. The accelerated pace of new knowledge requires life-long learning.
 Working lives will extend into our 70s and 80s but not by packing in 40-hour work weeks year after year. Flexibility will be key: gap years or sabbaticals will be common although they will be called by other names.
 Careers will vary and change throughout our longer lives. New training and learning will be required to stay current.
 Global societies are and will be much older. This means health-care needs will shift.
 Retirement will become an anomaly.
 Pensions, benefits, and other policies require updates.
 ???

What else can you add to this list?
Where do you see the biggest shifts already?
What changes are you witnessing to accommodate our new, longer lives?
Is the pace keeping up with needs?

Are you leveraging the experience of older workers as a vital economic asset?

FACT: Knowledge and expertise continue to increase beyond the age of 80.

FACT: Older workers are more innovative because it takes time for education and experience to be integrated.

FACT: Older adults contribute to better problem-solving and judgment especially in creative and innovative environments.

FACT: Older adults help to transfer knowledge and business norms

FACT: Older adults contribute to greater labour stability and economic growth when given the opportunity.

FACT: OLDER ADULTS ARE NOT A DRAIN ON SOCIETY!

Consider these paradoxes:
1. Our longer life-spans are heralded as a triumph and yet older adults are viewed with a mix of respect and entrenched age prejudice.

2. In developed nations there are declining birth rates along with ageing populations resulting in a serious talent shortages, but instead of capitalizing on the potential, experience and expertise of older adults, we continue to overlook them.

And so I ask you, why the disconnect?

What do you think needs to happen in order for ageism to be dismantled?

I meet individuals at events, receive emails and calls regularly from capable, talented, and skilled older people (50 +) who are seeking employment but are continually ghosted.

Something must change!
