This Elle Canada issue changed my life.

It was the summer of 2007. I was sitting alone in my living room, feeling the weight of losing a job I had poured my heart and soul into. As I flipped through an Elle Canada magazine, an article on personal branding caught my eye and changed everything. It was a beacon of hope at a time when I felt rejected and like a failure.

The concept of personal branding became a lighthouse for me. Though I had been in the marketing world already for a number of years, this perspective was a total shift in worldview:

→ That people could have their own brands.
→ That branding is really about authenticity.
→ That you get to choose what you want to be known for.

Business branding hadn’t really caught on to these ideals yet. But personal branding was an emerging movement that I knew I wanted to be part of.

Nobody was teaching it. There were no courses on it.
There were a handful of books.

I dove into this new field as my chosen craft, wanting to help others tap into this secret path to living in alignment with your genius and your truth.

I quickly realized that the principles of personal branding could be applied to small businesses as well – as long as those businesses were the extension of a visionary who wanted to do work that matters.

For the past 17 years, I’ve lived and breathed the pursuit of making authentic branding possible for everyone. For thirteen of those years, I’ve navigated the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, learning from incredible mentors and my own trial and error.

I've lovingly crafted well over 100 brands, each a true expression of the visionary behind them. I've developed, taught, and proven my Substantial Branding methodology, engineered client methodologies, and built thought leadership platforms. I've overseen every detail of the brand journey—from photoshoots and nurture sequences to proposal templates.

Along the way, I also launched a boutique brand agency, supported by an absolute dream team of creatives.

Staying in your craft is such an important part of your magnetism.

The question should always be: "How to I create a transformation for my clients that they will rave about?" and that means freeing yourself up to BE in your craft, obsess over the problem.

I've noticed a bit of a backlash happening against 'expert' brands.

And I agree with some of it.

Just because somebody’s an expert, doesn’t mean that they know your path to success.

Experts know their fields inside and out. They have years (or decades) of experience creating results in that field for varying types of clients.

But they might not know YOU. They don't have your perspective. And they, just like you, they need to constantly keep up with unpredictable changes in the world or in their industry.

*True experts understand their limitations and don’t pretend to have all the answers.*

Gurus are people who teach you to accomplish something exactly as it worked for them.

It’s not always all bad. There are often universal underlying principles at play that help people achieve great things.

But 'guru advice' really does need to be taken with a grain of salt (especially if they built their success within a completely different climate or context than you).

This is why navigating business advice requires a STRONG inner compass on your part.

We need to take ownership over our own journey. To stay in the driver’s seat and avoid outsourcing our big decisions to experts (or gurus) who don’t know who we are.

We need to cultivate our own sense of self-trust and wisdom. And develop the skill of discernment so we can take what works for us and leave the rest behind.

When we have this priceless foundation, we can take the gems of business advice offered by experts (AND gurus) and turn them into big leaps and strides in our growth.

Don’t be afraid. (Sounds cliché, but keep reading for my POV.)

Trust me, as a copywriter for Realize Your Brand, I send copy over to Lisa that I’ve written for clients and I’m often thinking, “I don’t know where this came from, but it felt right so let’s see what happens.” I send things all the time before ‘I’m ready’ because if it isn’t the filters that get us while we’re writing, it’s the editing we do after.

We start trying to please too many voices.

Of course you will edit your writing, looking for structural problems or repetition, etc. you just don’t want to edit out the fire and passion that comes when you shed the ‘shoulds’ and just tell people what you know. It’s FLOW.

But here’s the pivotal caveat:
You only get this freedom in your writing if you are extremely certain about some things.

WHO you are talking to.
WHAT you are here to do.

If you’re wishy-washy, your writing will reflect it. It’ll be boring because your choice of audience is too general and then no one cares. It’ll be too long because you haven’t landed on ONE thing that really matters. It’ll be too much because you’re not meeting your people where they are at.

People will scroll by if you’re not bravely doing what you’re here to do because they can tell if you’re trying to stand out by being… just like everyone else.

All kinds of copy works! All kinds of content works. So don’t be afraid to just get in there and start – because it can all be muddled with later. Right now? We need your voice.

Just you.

I'm curious: how well do you tolerate a learning curve?

I’ll be honest - they’re rough for me.

I’ve been doing a lot of firsts lately:

I hosted my first summit.
I’m showing up in new ways on social.
I’m composing a group offering that isn’t like anything I’ve created before.

And I have to admit – I didn’t see the pain of the learning curve coming!

On days when I’m keeping within the realm of the tested and true – those skills and activities I’ve honed over many years – it can be easy for me to believe that I’ve completely healed the mind traps that used to be constantly present for me:

The perfectionism.
The self-doubt.
The fear of failure or ridicule.

And then? I try something new.
Something public.
And it all comes flooding back!

I genuinely believed nobody would want to speak at my summit >> I ended up with twice as many quality applicants as I needed!

I worried that nobody would sign up >> We celebrated 150 registered attendees!

I feel like an absolute child as I experiment and test out different tools on social. I’m convinced that people are seeing my posts and thinking “aww how cute, that’s so 2021!” 😂>> I re-discover the power of having my own back and allowing others to have their opinions of me. And, of course, of laughing at myself!

Creating content is HARDER than I expected and I quickly start to worry that means I’m doing the wrong thing >> I remember that the hard things are actually the ones worth doing. And that:

They. Get. Easier!

We have to push through the discomfort of the learning curve in order accomplish anything new. Anything new at all!

If we want to reach new levels of performance, success, impact, and happiness?

The learning curve is exactly where we need to be.
