Today, September 30th, 2021, is the first official, legislated National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to recognize the legacy and lasting impact of residential schools. This recognition is important and long overdue.⁣
⁣
Originally declared Orange Shirt Day in 2013, people across the country began wearing orange and participating in Orange Shirt Day events to recognize and raise awareness about the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada.⁣
⁣
Orange Shirt Day originates from the story of Phyllis Webstad from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation who, upon arriving for her first day at St. Joseph’s Residential School in Williams Lake, BC at the tender age of 6, was stripped of all of her clothes including the beautiful shiny new orange shirt that her grandmother had purchased for the occasion.⁣

The last few months have been difficult for Canadians as we have come face to face with the disturbing truth about the extent of the traumas experienced by Indigenous children at residential schools, and the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and well being. This is Canada’s ugly secret.⁣

Today, we wear our orange shirts proudly as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. Every child matters.⁣

Are you looking to ｌｅｖｅｌｕｐ, but are left wondering what to do with your unusable car seat? 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝, 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 or 𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 car seats should not be passed along to family or friends, or left out for garbage pick-up without first rendering them unusable.

The trick is to make it 𝙪𝙣𝙪𝙨𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 for anyone else so they don’t unknowingly 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙩𝙮 of their child by using an 𝙪𝙣𝙨𝙖𝙛𝙚 car seat.⁣
⁣
It might seem over the top, but there have been many instances of car seats being removed from the trash curb-side and sold online and/or used by unsuspecting families. Straps can often be reordered and replaced, so dismantling the seat beyond repair and making any relevant information on the seat’s stickers illegible can prevent this from happening.⁣

Before you balk, let me break it down. Cars are designed for adults, 𝙉𝙊𝙏 children. So are seat belts. Most children do not fit the 𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘵 properly until 𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝟒'𝟗", which generally happens between 𝟏𝟎-𝟏𝟐 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙜𝙚.⁣
⁣
One of the biggest mistakes we make as ⁣
parents is graduating our kids to the next stage too soon. Like babies and toddlers, older children are also at risk of serious injury in the event of a crash. A recent study showed that 7 out of 10 parents didn’t know when to move their child to the adult seat belt, and 9 out of 10 did so too early!
⁣
Growing children need a "boost". The booster lifts your child up and positions the 𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘵 across the strongest areas of his body, so that it can do its job.⁣
⁣
A child is ready to ride without a booster, provided they meet 𝘼𝙇𝙇 the legal requirements 𝘼𝙉𝘿 the 𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘵 fits them properly. There is so much more to consider than just age.⁣
⁣
So, here’s the plan. First up, click ＳＡＶＥ now so that you can reference this later! Next, when your child begins questioning the need for a booster (𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭), walk them through this ‘𝟓 𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙥 𝙏𝙚𝙨𝙩’ to determine seat belt readiness.⁣
⁣
It’s a ‘𝙋𝙖𝙨𝙨’ when you can say 𝙔𝙀𝙎 to all 𝟓 steps. If they pass, ditch the booster - but 𝙊𝙉𝙇𝙔 𝙄𝙉 𝙏𝙃𝘼𝙏 𝘾𝘼𝙍. Remember, fit is 𝘷𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘭𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 - belt fit can vary from car to car or even between seating positions within the same car. Be sure to measure for each seating position and in every car.⁣
⁣
Let me leave you with this. Just because the law says an 8 year old no longer needs a booster seat, doesn’t mean that it’s the safest option. The laws is the 𝙈𝙄𝙉𝙄𝙈𝙐𝙈 safety measure. Our job is to keep our kids safe, always. And proper car seat use and safety goes so far beyond just doing up the buckles.

We all want what's best for our kiddos and that includes keeping them safe from the sun. But you might be shocked to learn that something most of us (me 🙋🏻‍♀️) have done is 𝙥𝙪𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙖𝙩 𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙠.⁣ Here’s why.⁣
⁣
Covering your car seat or stroller with a blanket (even a thin muslin cotton one) will 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 the temperature inside – possibly to 𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘴.⁣
⁣
Remember, our little ones are more sensitive to heat. Their body temperature can 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝟑 𝐭𝐨 𝟓 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 and they sweat less, reducing their bodies’ ability to cool down naturally.⁣
⁣
A lack of airflow can create a 𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐞-𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 and cause temperatures to 𝐬𝐨𝐚𝐫 in the seat. By stopping the circulation of fresh air, you are impacting baby’s breathing and body temperature, putting him at increased risk of heat stroke, dehydration, re-breathing, and even SIDS.⁣
⁣
Without air circulating, parents unknowingly create a 𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙣. Many assume that since they’re providing shade it’d be cooler inside, but the 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘦.⁣
⁣
Here’s the deal: while you're blocking the sun’s rays, you're also blocking access to much-needed 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙝 𝙖𝙞𝙧.⁣
⁣
What’s more, that covering makes it impossible to see bub’s face and monitor breathing, or see signs of overheating such as a red face, rapid breathing, or lethargy.⁣
⁣
Baby’s face should always be visible at a quick glance, without any fabric blocking your view.⁣
⁣
Mamas, covering your car seat or stroller with 𝙰𝙽𝚈𝚃𝙷𝙸𝙽𝙶 that isn’t specifically designed to safely do so, is dangerous - outdoors and in.⁣

𝙸’𝚟𝚎 𝚐𝚘𝚝 𝚝𝚠𝚘 𝚠𝚘𝚛𝚍𝚜 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚢𝚘𝚞: 𝐅𝐈𝐓 𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐈𝐓. Your seat has a weight limit, a height limit, but did you know that it also has a 𝘍𝘪𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵!!⁣
⁣
𝐅𝐈𝐓 𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐈𝐓: how much space must remain between the top of your child’s head and the top of the seat shell/moveable head rest (on average 1-1.5”).⁣
⁣
When rear-facing, your kiddo’s head must be contained within the shell of the car seat to fully protect him from injury in the event of a crash. Think of it this way: your rear-facing seat is there to cradle your child and absorb the forces of a crash, thereby preventing your child’s body from taking the brunt of the impact. To do it’s job, your kiddo’s head must be 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 within the shell.⁣
⁣
For most rear-facing seats this means that your child must have at least 1” of space between the top of their head and the top of the seat, or the top of the seat’s fully extended head rest. But don’t guess - always consult your manual because some seats have a 1.5”𝘍𝘪𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵.
Every rear-facing seat has a weight, height, and 𝘍𝘪𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵. Once your bub has reached 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝐎𝐍𝐄 of the 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 limits of the seat, it has been 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧. These 3 limits will be identified in the manual (read your manual!!) and you can also find both the weight and height limits on the information label located on the side of your seat - and if you’re lucky, the 𝘍𝘪𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵 will also be there!⁣
⁣
While not always obvious (or easy to find!), never underestimate the importance of the 𝘍𝘪𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵. Our kids come in all shapes and sizes, and because some have longer legs and others longer torsos, manufacturers have imposed a 𝘍𝘪𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵 to ensure that the most vulnerable parts of your kiddo’s body (head, neck, spine) are always fully protected by the confines of the seat. The 𝘍𝘪𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵 is as important as both the weight and height limits of the seat.⁣

Don’t come up short! Yes, weight and height are indicators of fit, BUT don’t forget to check the 𝘍𝘪𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘵 of your seat!⁣

This Canada Day we come together as one in support of residential school survivors and Indigenous communities across the country.

The time is now to educate ourselves on the history of residential schools and the ongoing trauma experienced by Indigenous communities as a result of religious and colonial systems and practices.

I originally had plans to post a little reminder about car seats and festivities, but today just isn’t the day for that post. Today is about remembering, reflecting, and learning. Together we are stronger.

𝙻𝚎𝚝 𝚖𝚎 𝚔𝚎𝚎𝚙 𝚒𝚝 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚕: 𝙻𝚊𝚙𝚍𝚘𝚐 𝚖𝚘𝚝𝚘𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚒𝚜 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝚜𝚊𝚏𝚎.⁣ I get it, you love your pup! Heck, he might be your emotional support animal. But while it’s tempting to let Fido ride shotgun or peer out the car window from your lap, driving with a dog behind the wheel is 𝐍𝐎𝐓 safe.⁣
⁣
This is more than just a 𝘱𝘦𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘦𝘷𝘦 (see what I did there?!), it’s downright dangerous - for you, for your kids, and it’s especially dangerous for your dog.⁣
⁣
Let’s break this down. A dog on your lap is a 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. It limits your ability to control your car properly. 𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐓.⁣
⁣
What’s more, it puts him 𝘢𝘵 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘬. At 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘬 of becoming injured by the force of the airbag. At 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘬 of hitting the windshield with the force of a cannonball. Even at 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘬 of being propelled out the window. Not only can a dog be gravely injured or worse, but he can hurt other passengers as well.⁣
⁣
To put it into perspective, Fido will weigh 20-25 times his weight in a 50 km crash. That means a 10 lbs dog can turn into 200+ lbs of force poised to rocket through the air. 𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞, 𝐍𝐎.⁣
⁣
Keep your pooch in the back seat or cargo area in a secured crate/carrier. If you decide to forgo the crate, don't allow your pet to ride with his head out the window, and 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 in the back seat in a 𝙲𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝙿𝚎𝚝 𝚂𝚊𝚏𝚎𝚝𝚢 (𝙲𝙿𝚂) certified harness.⁣
⁣
Although there are no government regulations or safety standards governing pet restraints for the car, the 𝙲𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝙿𝚎𝚝 𝚂𝚊𝚏𝚎𝚝𝚢 performs independent crash tests as part of the 𝙲𝙿𝚂 𝙲𝚎𝚛𝚝𝚒𝚏𝚒𝚎𝚍 𝙿𝚛𝚘𝚐𝚛𝚊𝚖. Their goal is to develop a trusted 𝘶𝘯𝘣𝘪𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 list of pet-safety restraints that 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 in crash testing.⁣
⁣
Because 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 crash-testing and 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 are 𝐍𝐎𝐓 the same.⁣
