QUESTION: If I asked you to make a list of everything currently in your house including the basement and garage - could you do it?

We've had enough bad weather here in the past couple of years to know that it's tough to recover from disasters! But planning and preparation can make things a bit easier!

I'm attaching a comprehensive Planning, Preparation, Clean UP and Recovery document I compiled from decades of working in disaster recovery at the grass roots level. It's a good reminder of things we need to do BEFORE we find ourselves in another nasty situation.

(When you click on the link, click 'Make a copy' and you will have access to the document in your Google Docs). You are welcome to shae this post.

Not in a disaster right now? Then Please read the planning and preparation section - It's a LOT easier to do the planning before you need it! Being proactive and having a solid plan in place, preparing your property and updating your insurance can make a massive difference when disastrous weather or other emergencies hit.

For those who asked for this to be shareable - now it is!

Access Google Docs with a personal Google account or Google Workspace account (for business use).

The pandemic has been tough for everyone - and we all want it to be over. I want to see my grand-kids... I want my life back! BUT, I also recognize that this pandemic did not come with an "Off" switch where someone (including Prime Minister Trudeau) can just shut it down. It has a life of it's own and it didn't come with an instruction manual. So everyone is having to figure it out on the fly. Could we have done better - quite likely - but judging now with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight and trying to apply today's knowledge to the past 23 months makes no sense. Can we learn from it - sure. But we're still in it - and asking for iron clad guarantees in a situation that is still evolving is unrealistic at best - and ridiculous in the extreme.

I get we're all frustrated, however I am stunned to hear the organizers and groups protesting on Parliament Hill and occupying the downtown core stating that their intention is to force our democratically elected Parliament to resign - so they can take over and run the country along with the Senate and the Governor General.

There are thousands of people supporting the protest organizers - So I ask you - Have you decided how you feel about overthrowing the government?

The proper term for this is "sedition". Sedition is defined as "words or speech that incite people to rebel against the government or governing authority. Words that inspire a revolution that overthrows the government are an example of sedition. An activity or communication aimed at overthrowing governmental authority". In Canada it's an indictable offense with jail time of up to 14 years. It's also an assault on a democratically elected government (ours - whether you voted for the Liberals or not)... and replacing it with self-appointed civilians who have decided to take over, and that is an insurrection.

My Grandmother told me years ago that if there is a group of pigs in a barnyard - and some of them are rolling in the mud, ALL the pigs will end up covered in mud. Be sure you know what you're supporting - because "oops I didn't realize" won't protect our democracy.

The images from the capital will be hard to forget, but they do not represent Canada

To Mask or Not to Mask... That is the question!!

Me.... v.s. We....Where are the limits between individual rights and community or collective rights?

Masks have become a major topic for debate these days – a friend insists that there is no way anyone has the right to force him to wear a mask. He got angry the other day when a store refused to let him enter without a mask (it’s mandated where he lives that everyone wears a mask in public areas). So what’s right here?
I would suggest that he, like everyone else has a right to choose. But along with the 'right' to choose also comes the responsibility to accept the consequences of those choices... because no human being is an island - especially right now. .

Individual Rights + responsibility for those choices = acceptable risk of consequences for all involved.

When the world is all about 'ME" (as an individual) then I make those choices for myself... but when there is a "WE" (ie community implication) where do the individual rights end and the community needs take over?

So I have the right to throw a punch - it's my choice. But my right to throw a punch does NOT extend to hitting you in the face... because you have a right to be safe. So throw all the punches you want - but make sure they are not affecting anyone else.

When it comes to this pandemic - absolutely people have the right to choose whether they want to wear a mask or not. However if they choose not to wear it, then they do NOT have the right to go anywhere where they can infect others. So the responsibility that goes along with exercising that "right to choose" is accepting the responsibility to stay home or completely isolate from anyone else.

The hard part is that those who are busy screaming about their rights seem to miss the 'responsibility' part of the equation completely. For example - If I'm infected and I won't wear a mask and I'm exhaling the virus by breathing, laughing, talking, yelling, exercising, coughing or sneezing - I have a responsibility to keep all that air coming out of me to myself - nobody else wants it. So the only way to avoid spreading whatever I'm exhaling would be to stay entirely to myself - ie stay home.

Rights without responsibilities is just a childish temper tantrum complete with foot stomping and screaming "It's not FAIR!!!" - just like my kids used to do when they were 6. So by all means choose, “Yes” or “No” re the mask but if it's "No and you can't make me wear it!!" - then at least be adult enough to take responsibility to protect others. You can't have one without the other.

At the Ottawa Executives' Association this morning we were discussing business marketing strategies... As we start to reopen businesses and our economy there is going to be an unprecedented demand for non-medical face masks. If you are buying non-medical masks, it's important to ensure you are getting masks that are appropriately labelled and made. For more information: https://www.facebook.com/competitionbureaucanada/photos/a.474668569326214/2752417054884676/?type=3&theater

Stay well, stay safe!

If you sell non-medical fabric , do not make false or misleading claims about prevention. These claims would be considered illegal under the Competition Act and the Textile Labelling Act. See more here: https://bit.ly/CB_COVID

Cloth for sale also require a label that indicates fibre composition and dealer identity. Everyone selling these masks, whether or , must comply. See more here:

Consult Health Canada for info on the recommended use and limitations of non-medical : https://bit.ly/2xWlcSE
