One of the biggest mistakes I see incorporated professionals make is treating their corp and personal finances as two separate things.

They're not.

Let's say your corp has $750,000 sitting in cash.

On the personal side, you have a mortgage, RRSP room, TFSA room, maybe an RESP for the kids, and you're trying to decide whether to pay yourself a salary or dividends.

Most people look at each of those decisions independently.

But they're all connected.

The way you pay yourself affects your taxes, your RRSP room, your CPP, your estate planning, your government benefits and how much stays invested inside your corp.

One decision on the corporate side almost always creates consequences on the personal side.

That's where I see some of the biggest planning opportunities, not by finding a better ETF, but by connecting all the pieces.

I read this Sun Life article today and it said “Less than 5% of Canadians delay their CPP past age 65, and fewer than 2% wait until the maximum age of 70.”

But why is that? Why do most people take it early?

It’s clearly a psychological fear of “What if I die early and leave money on the table?”

I am not saying that’s everyone’s reasoning but I bet that’s 90% of people’s fear.

What if you live to 95 or a 100 and run out of money? What then?

Between the age of 65 and 70 you need a bridge strategy. The smarter strategy is drawing down RRSPs and RRIFs during those early retirement years, solves two major problems at once. It funds your lifestyle from ages 65 to 70 and it shrinks your RRIF balance before age 71.

Unless you have a health issue that might reduce your life expectancy or you don’t have enough assets to fund the bridge years then the math clearly says defer.

Say your professional corp earns $400K a year and you only need $200K to live, you don’t have to withdraw all $400K. You leave $200K inside the corp.

That $200K is taxed at the small business rate (~12.2% in Ontario for the first $500K), not your personal marginal rate (which could be 40–50%).

That means:

– More money stays in the corp
– You now have more capital to invest
– And it’s growing without the drag of personal tax

You’re essentially building wealth before the CRA gets their full cut.

And if structured properly, with a hold co, tax-efficient investments, or corporate-class funds, you can control when that money gets taxed personally.

That’s how incorporated professionals can outpace employees, even with the same or lesser income.
