Autism affects millions of families and no two experiences are the same. Yet for decades the diagnostic and care model has treated it as if they were.

A major new research initiative called SPECTRA launched this week in the United States with one goal: change that. Using AI, genetic data, and real-world outcomes, it aims to speed up diagnosis, understand why autism presents so differently from person to person, and match individuals to care that actually fits their specific needs.

"Autism is not one-size-fits-all, and our science and care cannot be either."

Being Heumann tells the story of one of the most important disability rights activists in history. The woman who helped shape the Americans with Disabilities Act. Who sat in a federal building for 28 days to make it happen.

Starring Ruth Madeley, who has spina bifida, alongside Mark Ruffalo and Rob Delaney. Directed by the filmmaker behind CODA.

Scott Lacey lost his sight in his mid-20s. He did not stop moving.

He started walking to relieve stress. That became jogging. That became long-distance running. That became the Boston Marathon and Ironman competitions.

On August 9, 2026, he swam 8.2 miles around Mackinac Island in Michigan for nine hours straight, becoming the first visually impaired person ever to complete the swim.

He does not want to be called inspiring. He wants people to change their expectations.

"The expectation isn't that a person with a disability can't do it. The expectation is they can do it. They just might do it a little differently."

Hugh Herr lost both legs in a climbing accident at 17. He went on to build some of the most advanced bionic limbs ever created at MIT.

His TED talk ends with Boston Marathon bombing survivor Adrianne Haslet-Davis dancing on stage for the first time since losing her leg, using a prosthetic his lab built specifically for her, programmed with the fundamentals of dance.

It is one of those rare talks that is both technically stunning and completely human. Worth every minute.

A Canadian organization is 3D printing assistive devices and giving them away for free.

Makers Making Change maintains an open-source library of hundreds of devices, from adapted toys and accessible switches to bottle openers and pen grips. Volunteers print and assemble them, and they are distributed to people across Canada at low or no cost through occupational therapy clinics and community networks.

It is a small operation doing something quietly extraordinary. And it is built right here in Canada.

The Neural Band detects motor intent through the wrist, meaning users can control devices through subtle gestures rather than full hand movements. For people with limited mobility, that is not a gadget. That is a game changer.

A new program is placing wearable pendants, wall-mounted devices, and discreet home sensors in the homes of seniors waiting for long-term care placements.

No cameras. No microphones. Just technology that monitors for falls, medication adherence, and changes in activity, giving families real peace of mind and giving seniors a chance to stay home longer.

Important update for Canadians applying for the Disability Tax Credit.

Starting July 14, the CRA is changing how DTC applications are processed online. A new streamlined digital form lets both applicants and their medical practitioners access it directly, which the CRA says will cut down delays significantly.

And starting September 8, older versions of the T2201 paper form will no longer be accepted. Only versions from 2023 or later will be valid.
If you or someone you know has been putting off applying, now is a good time to act.
