Cuba private sector is booming, and those who know how to navigate it are building serious wealth. Since the government allowed private businesses (mipymes), thousands of entrepreneurs have seized new opportunities.

While Cuba is often perceived as a nation with limited economic opportunities, a lesser-known reality reveals a growing class of affluent individuals, primarily emerging from the private sector. Since 2021, Cuba has implemented economic reforms allowing the establishment of small and medium-sized private enterprises (mipymes), which can employ up to 100 people. This shift has led to the creation of over 8,000 such businesses, fostering entrepreneurship and enabling some Cubans to amass considerable wealth. 
These private enterprises have introduced products and services previously unavailable in the Cuban market, catering to a population eager for variety and quality. For instance, Mercatoria, a distribution company in Havana, now offers goods like Goya beans and Hunt’s tomato sauce, reflecting the evolving consumer landscape. 
However, this burgeoning private sector has also accentuated economic disparities. While some entrepreneurs thrive, a significant portion of the population continues to face economic hardships, highlighting the complex interplay between innovation and inequality in Cuba’s evolving economy.
