I don't know who needs to hear this but BUSY FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS is not a niche! That's all of us lol ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

The best way to figure out your niche is to ask yourself the following questions:

WHAT problem do I solve?
WHO do I solve it for?

To actually book out your services and connect with clients you LOVE serving, you have to go beyond helping people with "whatever they need".

I did that for way too long and it was exhausting.

Not to mention, it's getting harder and harder to stand out as a general VA or all-rounder marketing freelancer.

You've got to get a little bit craftier these days and think about what's going to give you your EDGE.

Entrepreneurs want to hire service providers who can confidently solve their problems.

Tell me...what problem do YOU solve for clients?

REAL TALK ๐ŸŽค THE CONTENT STRATEGIES BIG COMPANIES USE AREN'T PRACTICAL FOR SMALL BUSINESSES!

I see you, tired small business owner.

You've been told you need to create unique content calendars for your Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram....oh, and now there's TikTok and Reels too.

Not to mention you should be running a podcast, YouTube channel, and you better not forget to be consistent with your weekly newsletter too.

The worst thing you can do as a small business owner is to try and create unique content for each platform, spreading yourself too thin and burning out in the process ๐Ÿ˜ช

Instead?

Focus on a few key platforms, and then strategically repurpose from there.

Repurpose your YouTube videos into blogs.
Turn those blog posts into IG captions.
Create Reels out of your top-performing IG posts.
Send your email list a snippet of your blog.

The opportunities for strategic repurposing are endless.

Want to get in a repurposing flow where all you need to do is show up on video (or podcast - if you do shorter, solo episodes) and have me repurpose that content all over the internet?

Be sure to check out my done-for-you content repurposing packages here: www.emmawolno.com/work-with-me

Do you strategically repurpose your content? Or is all your content creation beginning to have you feel burned out?

Thereโ€™s no other way to put it...

If you are a personal brand in 2020, showing up on video is an absolute must.

Thereโ€™s no better way to build you like, know and trust factor.

Plus, creating regular video content means who constantly have ideas to pull from and content to repurpose (you can turn longer videos into blogs, newsletters, social captions, graphics, micro-videos...the list goes on!).

Is video a part of your content marketing strategy? If not, whatโ€™s holding you back? @ Ottawa, Ontario

One thing Iโ€™ve learned in my just over two years of business?

As a new entrepreneur, I often felt like if I wasnโ€™t doing things the way everyone else was, I was doing them wrong.

Take for example everyoneโ€™s obsession with Dubsado. If youโ€™re not sure what that is, itโ€™s a CRM that it feels like everyone and their dog raves about in the online space.

For the longest time, I felt I โ€œneededโ€ Dubsado to successfully run my business.

I felt like I needed to have flawlessly executed automated workflows and a perfect onboarding process to โ€œget to the next levelโ€.

So, after months of hearing about the life-changing magic of Dubsado, I finally left my free software and started paying nearly $50 CAD/month for Dusbado.

It felt clunky, unintuitive.

I couldnโ€™t charge in multiple currencies (I would have had to set up two different brands for my American clients and Canadian ones).

Everything felt difficult to set up. And I had purchased the software to make my life easier!

While many said I just needed to take the time to figure it out or hire someone to set it up (which many do!) I realized that maybe this software just wasnโ€™t my jam.

๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ I wasnโ€™t doing business wrong if I didnโ€™t use the most hyped-up software. And there is no business rulebook that says every part of your client process needs to be automated.

I now stick to my simple . Itโ€™s a much lower monthly bill and while not everything is automated, I can easily duplicate and template proposals and contracts, so I donโ€™t need to spend hours onboarding clients. And I really have no problem taking the few minutes to send attaching a personalized message when I send off a proposal or invoice (I quite like it in fact!).

The point is, what works for you might not be the same thing as what works for others. The beautiful thing about business is that weโ€™re all individuals!

Maybe youโ€™re โ€œshouldโ€ isnโ€™t your client onboarding processโ€ฆ

Maybe you think you SHOULD create unique content from scratch for every platform instead of repurposing

Maybe you think you SHOULD post every day because thatโ€™s how youโ€™ll get clients

Maybe you think you SHOULD be on a certain social media platform because thatโ€™s โ€˜whatโ€™s hotโ€™ but it brings you zero joyโ€ฆ

Itโ€™s time to throw out those SHOULDS! Itโ€™s your business, you get to decide ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Have you ever had a bad case of the โ€œshouldsโ€?

Happy National Freelancerโ€™s Day!!

I am freaking grateful for this life ๐Ÿ’—

Grateful that I get to work with my cat on my lap ๐Ÿ˜น

Grateful that I get to work on my own terms - supporting small business and entrepreneurs that inspire me โœจ

Grateful that I get to use my creativity every day and do what Iโ€™m passionate about - writing and creating content โœ๏ธ

Grateful that my business has allowed me to live and work in other countries and travel the world ๐ŸŒ

Freelancing has offered me SO many opportunities. I can honestly say that the past two years have been the most incredible years of my professional life. Iโ€™ve had more job satisfaction than ever before and feel pretty proud of what Iโ€™ve created for myself โค๏ธ

If youโ€™ve ever thought about taking a chance or a big risk to work for yourselfโ€ฆDO IT! Itโ€™s not always for the faint of heart but in my opinion is so worth it.

Cheers to all the other freelancers out there working towards their big dreams! Letโ€™s keep being bold, taking risks, supporting one another and making things happen ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

06/15/2020

I am listening.

Over the past couple of weeks, Iโ€™ve been educating myself and waking up to what has been going on around me. While Iโ€™ve been sharing resources and information on anti-racism in my stories, Iโ€™ve been struggling to find the words to properly articulate myself and post on this issue.

In the past, racism was a problem I always empathized with, but ultimately did not take responsibility for.

I have come to realize that empathizing is nowhere near enough.

I see now that if we want to create a society where racism no longer exists, it is up to ALL of us to take responsibility for it. It doesnโ€™t matter if you donโ€™t think you have a racist bone in your body.

We must turn our โ€œIโ€™m not racistโ€ remarks into a deep understanding that racism exists everywhere, including occasionally within ourselves, no matter how unintentional. It is our responsibility to unlearn and confront our biases and blind spots, because we all have them.

So, I promise to not stay silent on this topic any longer.

I vow to never again think that itโ€™s not my problem to solve.

I will never again assume that racism is not a big issue in my country or community just because the population is multicultural or diverse.

I know I have work to do, and I am learning. I am listening. I am standing with all BIPOC who have ever felt like they had to fight harder than others to have their voices heard. Who have ever felt like they werenโ€™t valued or respected. No human should ever have to feel that way.

I also understand that educating myself is just the beginning. I will be working behind the scenes to figure out how I can best live out these values and incorporate them into running my business.

Today and every day, black lives matter. Black lives are worthy. Black lives are needed.

PODCAST SHOW NOTES VS. A PODCAST BLOGโ€ฆWhich option is better??

If youโ€™re a podcaster, you probably realize you need to have SOME form of written content to accompany your podcast and put on your site.

Maybe youโ€™ve seen some content creators who create bulleted show notes, and others who create detailed, long-form blog postsโ€ฆbut youโ€™re not sure what the better option is!

Yes, writing out a full-length blog post is a bit more workโ€ฆbut itโ€™s so much more valuable in my opinion!

Why, you ask?

1๏ธโƒฃ BLOG POSTS ARE BETTER FOR SEO. Yes, show notes are better than nothing for SEO, but those 300-word show notes are quite honestly not doing a whole lot for your site. Google values detailed, long-form content, formatted with paragraphs and headings. Those bullet points arenโ€™t quite cutting it and probably wonโ€™t rank against long-form blogposts.

2๏ธโƒฃ BLOG POSTS ARE BETTER FOR PINTEREST. Yes, you can totally create pins for your podcast episodes and try to get listeners from Pinterest. But the reality is, MOST of the content pinned to Pinterest is blogs. Itโ€™s what Pinners are usually in the mood for. If they click on your content and realize itโ€™s a 40-minute podcast, they might leave without clicking anything, increasing your siteโ€™s bounce rate.

3๏ธโƒฃ BLOG POSTS ARE MORE VERSATILE. When you embed your podcast content AND have the option to read the blog just below, youโ€™re giving potential ideal clients more options. If theyโ€™re in a rush and just want to skim the content and get the most valuable points, they can do that. If they have some time on their hands and want to listen to the entire podcast, they can do that too! Whichever way they like to consume their content, youโ€™re giving them the OPTION to do so.

Do you need some help turning your podcast episodes into blogs? I can help you repurpose your content so you can boost your SEO!

UNPOPULAR OPINION ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

Not every piece of content you make has to be a masterpiece.

Do I believe in producing high-quality, high-value content for your audience? Heck yes!

But does that mean that every post, every email, every video you make has to be GROUNDBREAKING?

NO!

Sometimes it can just be a quote thatโ€™s inspiring you lately, a funny story that happened, or simply an update to let your audience know how youโ€™re doing.

Remember: we are all humans. Not every single post has to be value, value, value.

Itโ€™s okay to share the funny, the random, the vulnerable, the mundane even.

The most important thing is that you keep showing up and sharing - even when you second guess whether or not what you have to say is share-worthy

There's no point in creating amazing content if nobody sees it! ๐Ÿ‘€

Content creation is only part of the equation.

Have you thought about your content distribution strategy?

Content distribution could look like...
โœจ Guest posting your articles on other people's sites
โœจ Republishing content on platforms like LinkedIn and Medium
โœจ Putting calls to actions for your posts in social media
โœจ Distributing blog posts via your email newsletter

The options are endless!

Don't let your content distribution plan be an afterthought in your overall content strategy.

In a world where there is more noise than ever, getting our customers' attention via a well thought out content distribution/promotion strategy is the name of the game! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

Are you an OVERPLANNER?

I have to admitโ€ฆsometimes I can get shiny object syndrome when it comes to productivity and planning ๐Ÿคฃ

โœจ I use but sometimes wonder if I should switch to Asanaโ€ฆ
โœจ Iโ€™ve dabbled in because I love itโ€™s UIโ€ฆ
โœจ Iโ€™ve tested out spreadsheets and because so many entrepreneurs swear by it
โœจ Iโ€™m pretty satisfied with for invoicing, contracts and all that jazz but still get caught up in the hype about โ€ฆ
โœจIโ€™ve tested out planners, bullet journaling and using a digital calendarโ€ฆ

Iโ€™VE PRETTY MUCH TRIED IT ALL ๐Ÿคฃ

The thing that Iโ€™ve realized though?

Sometimes overplanning and focusing too much on โ€˜optimizingโ€™ my systems is simply a way to avoid ๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™–๐™ก๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™™๐™ค๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ฌ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ .

The quote I love that sums this up:

There is no silver productivity bullet that is going to transform your business overnight.

Sometimes you just gotta sit down, drink some coffee and actually do the darn thing ๐Ÿ˜‚

Does anyone else occasionally get distracted by all the planning and productivity biz tools out there?

My word of the year is POSSIBILITY โœจ

This year, I want to be open to the vast array of possibilities before me. I don't want to limit or confine myself to what I feel my business "should" look like or my life is "supposed" to look like.

I can tend to be a practical person, and just focus on the step right in front of me.

But this year I want to let myself dream BIG for my business!

I want to push the boundaries. I want to test myself and see what's really possible.

Maybe that means going to a business conference, hiring a team member, being featured on podcasts, or traveling the world.

My word - POSSIBILITY - is to remind me that while I may not know exactly what 2020 holds for me, it's all possible!

I'm ready to stretch my mindset and play bigger in the new year.

Do you have a word or intention for 2020?

Share it with me in the comments below ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป
