Here's something I see happen over and over: a company does thorough due diligence on a deal—acquisition, partnership, market entry. The financial analysis is solid. The legal review is comprehensive. Everything looks good.

Then six months after closing, something falls apart. And when you trace it back, the problem wasn't a hidden debt or an undisclosed liability. It was an assumption nobody realized they were making.

The real risk wasn't auditable. The process wasn't designed to find it.

Maybe it was an assumption about market growth. Maybe it was about whether key talent would stay. Maybe it was about whether the product advantage was actually sustainable, or just a temporary market situation.

The due diligence process was designed to surface known unknowns. It wasn't designed to challenge the assumptions underneath those unknowns.

I've watched this happen in deals worth millions. The most thorough due diligence process can give you complete confidence—while missing the actual risk.

The question isn't "did we audit this thoroughly?" It's "what am I assuming is true that I haven't actually tested?"

That's where the real risk lives.

Indecision looks safe until you realize it's the riskiest move of all.
