There are some projects that feel like more than projects, and Rowan House is one of them.
I had the absolute privilege of being part of this project working on the colour palette, finishes and fixtures, as well as providing the furniture. I’ll talk much more about the project itself another time, because there is so much about it that deserves to be told.
But for now, I want to share this photo with Lloyd Hussey with Vigilant Atlantic.
Lloyd and I met through Stella's Circle while working on Rowan House, and somewhere along the way we realized that he had actually played softball with my dad years ago. (Great home-run story there)
Lloyd has been doing this work for a long time, and it was impossible not to see how much this project meant to him. Not just the building, not just the construction or the logistics, but the people it was being created for and the dignity, care and intention behind every part of it. He was absolutely the right person for this job.
One of the moments that really stayed with me was when Laura Winters presented Lloyd with a dedication plaque and shared that the community kitchen at Rowan House would be named Eliza’s Kitchen, in honour of his late mother. There couldn’t have been a more fitting dedication.
I’ve worked for many years, on many projects, with many different companies and for many different causes. I think, over time, you start to look for the people and the projects that have a little more meaning behind them. The people who genuinely care about what they’re doing and, more importantly, who they’re doing it for.
Lloyd is one of those people.
His respect for the project, for the people involved, and for what it can mean to the community is something I won’t forget.
I feel incredibly lucky to have had a place in this project and an opportunity to work alongside everyone involved, but this first post is for him. It was an honour, genuinely.
I hope I get the chance to sit down with Lloyd one day and talk more about what Rowan House meant to him, to us, because I think that story is just as important as the building itself. But for now a heartfelt congratulations to everyone at Stella’s Circle, the funders and donors, and everyone’s who made this happen.
As Jill Bruce said today, “Hope lives here” ♥️
More to come….
