“The Best Okanagan Wineries for Architecture Lovers” — what an article to be named in Western Living Magazine!

Not only was I delighted for us to be included, but to be included as we approach the 13th anniversary of the building makes it even more special.

At times, our world lately feels a little… disposable? Like everything must be brand new to be special and deserving of praise. It has to be the biggest, the most Instagram-able.

When Dominic Unsworth, who designed our tasting room, and my dad John met for the first time, they clicked. He understood my dad’s vision completely. An efficient building with a smaller footprint, executed to perfection. Something that would “sit artfully” (a phrase I’m sure many of you have heard from John over the years) above our estate vineyards, while integrating beautifully with the land.

In retrospect, it’s a perfect metaphor for our entire business. Small footprint, meticulously executed, with no corners cut and respect for the land and landscape above all.

Thirteen years later, those principles still guide us. Our building continues to be celebrated for its artfulness and respect for the landscape, and I get the chance to dig back through Jon Adrian’s photo archives to revisit the details that make it so special.

Positioned above Skaha Lake, the winery connects seamlessly with its surroundings through natural materials, open sightlines and generous windows. The design avoids unnecessary flourishes, instead drawing attention to the changing light and vineyard rows stretching toward the lake, proving that great architecture can sometimes be at its most powerful when it simply complements the landscape.”

Reading that, I couldn’t help but think they weren’t just describing a building. They were describing the philosophy that has guided Painted Rock from the very beginning.

Happy Father’s Day to the OG! This is a flashback to the early days (maybe 2007?)—we sponsored and worked at a hydration station for Ironman Canada down on Lakeside Road, decked out in Painted Rock gear, when no one had ever heard of Painted Rock Estate Winery. It was a blast!
