Why is the price of computer memory and storage so high?

The prices of RAM and SSDs are high because massive AI data center demand has caused a severe global shortage of semiconductor manufacturing capacity and memory chips.

Key Causes of the Price Surge

• AI Data Center Demand: Tech giants (such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and OpenAI) are buying up massive amounts of high-speed memory and storage to build and train artificial intelligence models.
• Shift in Manufacturing Focus: Memory makers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have reallocated their wafer capacity toward high-margin server-grade memory, High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), and enterprise SSDs instead of consumer DDR4/DDR5 RAM and retail SSDs.
• NAND Flash and DRAM Shortages: The intense need for NAND flash (used in SSDs) and DRAM (used in RAM) has driven up component costs, with many suppliers reporting that their production capacity is sold out.
• Production Cuts and Market Control: Major manufacturers previously cut baseline output to stabilize their profit margins, creating tight supply conditions that let prices climb.
• Legacy Phase-Out: Older standards like DDR4 are being phased out, which has also driven up the price of legacy memory systems.

When Will Prices Drop?

• Industry analysts and market research reports (such as Omdia via Igor's Lab) indicate that no major price relief is expected before late 2027.
• While SSD prices may begin to stabilize later in 2027 as manufacturing capacity catches up, RAM prices are expected to remain elevated due to continuous AI infrastructure demand.

Why Flash Drives Fail
• Limited Write Cycles: Flash memory cells wear out after a finite number of write and erase operations, typically between 10,000 and 100,000 cycles.
• Charge Leakage: Data is stored as an electrical charge in tiny memory cells. Over time—even when left unused in a drawer—these charges slowly leak, which can corrupt files.
• Environmental Stress: High heat and humidity accelerate charge loss, damage internal circuits, and corrode the USB connector contacts.
• Unsafe Removal: Unplugging a drive while it is actively writing data can damage the file system or internal controller memory.
• Poor Quality Parts: Cheap or counterfeit drives often use low-grade memory components that fail much faster than name-brand hardware.
Lifespan and Prevention
• Typical Lifespan: Under normal conditions, a good quality flash drive lasts about 5 to 10 years.
• Best Practices: Always use the "Safely Remove Hardware" option in your operating system, avoid using flash drives for long-term archiving or heavy databases, and keep important files backed up in multiple locations.
