Bubba aced the second training session when met at a park. There were so many variables that went into helping him succeed.

Some being: keeping in motion, longer leash, higher value reinforcers, new open and wide environment for new smells, quicker to help when triggers are around.

Every dog's training journey looks different. Work with a fear and force free behaviour consultant to help modify your dog's behaviours.

Summer is just around the corner. Find an empty patio table and practice reinforcing patio behaviours you like from your dog while nobody is there!

Things to do before this exercise:
- a decompressing sniffari
- potty
- a play with dog buddy if appropriate
- scope out a patio table as far away from stimuli as possible (we went to start where your dog can get "wins")

Things to bring that may help:
- your dog's may/bed
- something to chew or lick long term
- high value treats for making good choices

Behaviours to reinforce if you want more of it:
- checking in
- disengaging from a potential trigger or distraction
- laying down, settling down
- responding to your redirect cues/positive interrupters

Remember that not all dogs like patio environments. It can cause dogs to feel overwhelmed, overstimulated and/or stressed. The distance to stimuli may cause dogs to feel flooded and trapped.

Don't ignore your dog's body language signalling they've hit their limit. Always advocate for what they need even if it means leaving the patio and taking them home where they can rest comfortably.

Find a fear and force free trainer near you to work on appropriate patio behaviours that benefit everyone :)

Third year in Penticton. Third consecutive year winning gold for dog training.

Fear and force free dog training taking the lead. When I first moved to Penticton I didn't know how the Okanagan would receive modern dog training. Turns out I've been pleasantly surprised. Dog guardians want to do right by their dogs.

There's a shift in how we coexist with our dogs. More compassion, less control. More meeting needs, less applying human morals. More addressing root function of behaviours, less one size fits all. More behavioural health and wellness, less quick fixes.

Here's to another year prioritizing dog welfare, long term solutions, recognizing animals as sentient beings and building trusting bonds.

Wei with Tails is returning to in-person private dog training for addresses located in Penticton, Summerland, Naramata, OK Falls and Kaleden. Virtual dog training remains available.

I specialize in fearful behaviours, reactivity (barking/lunging at sight of triggers) and aggression cases (bite history, resource guarding). I also cover behaviour fundamentals and other common items such as leash walking and recall.

Navigating pet professionals can be confusing and overwhelming as there are no regulations in the industry.

FearFreePets.com is one of the best ways to find professionals in the pet industry (vets, trainers, pet sitters/walkers and groomers) across North America who are committed to using ethical and up to date practices (FFCP)

IAABC.org examines, accredits and certifies Dog Behaviour Consultants (CDBC, CABC). Their directory will help you locate a CDBC near you who can take on complex and/or severe behaviour cases involving fear, aggression and/or reactivity. Continued education units are required to maintain standing credentials.

AnimalKind.ca .ca is another safe way to find pet professionals (trainers) specifically in BC who adhere to SPCA's fear and force free standards and must pass audits annually to renew accreditation.

Support and work with professionals who invest in the ongoing education and value being recognized in the industry by accrediting organizations backed by science 🤓
