Hey Everyone!!
Spring is here which means there are lots of new things for your pups to explore and also lots of things owners need to be aware of, over the next few days I’ll be posting some informative posts on some of these things, Starting with:
Kennel Cough
Just like the human cold, it happens! Kennel Cough (also known as Bordetella) is a contagious illness that can cause coughing, hacking, irritation to the throat, discharge from the nose and/or eyes, slight fever, loss of appetite and sneezing. As bad as this may sound it usually only lasts about 7-10 days. To make this lesser the Bordetella vaccine is a great idea for all pups that will be around other dogs (even if it’s just your friends dog the odd time, you don’t know where they have been!
To prevent kennel cough I only care for 1 family at a time and if there are symptoms I let owners know right away! My car’s seats are sprayed with a Lysol spray to disinfect and any dog that has been in my home MUST be symptom free and vaccinated
If your dog shows symptoms and ends up with kennel cough some great ways to soothe the throat is Honey, you can dissolve this in hot water, cool the water and then give it to them or feed it to them in their food, kongs or just off a spoon. Pineapple Juice helps with inflammation, you can freeze this in an ice cube tray and give it to them as treats, put this in a lick mat, add it to their kong etc.
Remember if your dog starts to show symptoms, keep them away from any dogs until the symptoms are fully gone, this means no daycare, no boarding, no play dates. Puzzles are a great way to keep your dog entertained during this period!!
