🕷️ ARE TICKS WORSE THIS YEAR IN PETERBOROUGH & THE KAWARTHA’S? 🕷️
Many homeowners, hikers, pet owners, and cottage families across Peterborough, the Kawartha Lakes, and Northumberland County are noticing more ticks this spring, and yes, tick activity does appear to be increasing across much of Central Ontario.
So where are they coming from?
Blacklegged ticks (commonly called deer ticks) have gradually spread across Ontario over the past several years. Warmer winters, wildlife movement, and migratory birds are believed to be contributing to their expansion.
Ticks are commonly found:
🌲 Along forest trails
🌿 In tall grass and brush
🏡 Around wooded properties
🏕️ Near cottages and waterfront areas
🐾 In areas frequented by wildlife and pets
Public health officials across Ontario continue reporting increased tick activity and Lyme disease cases in many regions.
While official 2026 numbers specific to Peterborough, the Kawartha Lakes, and Northumberland are still developing early in the season, infected ticks have been identified throughout surrounding Central Ontario areas in recent years.
A few prevention tips:
✅ Perform tick checks after outdoor activities
✅ Check pets regularly
✅ Keep grass trimmed short
✅ Remove leaf litter and brush piles
✅ Stay on cleared trails when hiking
✅ Wear light-coloured clothing outdoors
Not every tick carries Lyme disease, but awareness and prevention are becoming increasingly important as tick populations continue to expand.
