No warning at all (seriously, not even an inkling) just “you don't work here anymore.”

RUDE.

But also... THANK GOD. 😂

7 years later, I can confidently say they did me a MASSIVE favour.

I liked my job, I was good at it, I made decent money... and I probably would've stayed indefinitely because everything was “fine.”

BUT, here we are, 7 years later running a business that I might not have if that day didn't happen!

You can't always see the blessing in the moment, but I promise you... it's usually there somewhere!

You know what makes a 10 minute task take 45 minutes?

Having no f*cking idea how you did it last time.

- Where's the file?
- Which version did we use?
- What did I send them?
- Did I change something last time?
- Wait... why did I do it THIS way?

ANNNNNND now we have to redo all the thinking and decisions we already did the last time we did this EXACT SAME task.

THIS is the s**t that makes running a business feel harder than it needs to be.

The giant projects and complicated decisions are challenging, but that's part of doing what you love...

But the stupid little things you keep figuring out OVER AND OVER AND OVER... that's the energy suck you need to fix.

- Make the template
- Save it where you can find it
- Write down or record the process
- Bookmark the link

Your future self has enough to deal with, stop making it harder for them!

Random things I do to survive daily...

1. Alarms... so many alarms

If I have a call in the next hour and think "oh, I'll just do this thing quickly..." ... NOPE. It's a lie... I will get sucked in, lose track of time and then realize RIGHT before and rush OR be late. I set an alarm for 8 minutes before the call so I have time to wrap up what I'm doing and open the things I need for my call. (Example... it's 10:14am as I write this post and I have a call at 11am... I set an alarm before I started).

2. Same lunch... every day

As a business owner I make so many decisions... and the last thing I want to do is figure out what I'm having for lunch. If I have to figure it out, the not eating option becomes the default and then I am HANGRY by dinner and no one wants that. So to keep life easy I have a protein shake. I am nourished and I avoid hanger status.

3. I manage my energy... not my time

Time blocking is great for some people, but I've learned that my energy matters more than the clock.

Every morning I look at the things on my plate and map out my day based on how I'm feeling. If I'm having a high-energy morning, I just jump right in... but if I'm struggling then I adjust what's on my list for the day so it's actually realistic... then I start at the top and work my way down (to remove the prioritization barrier).

Being a business owner is exhausting, but you can make it less exhausting!

Everyone has that chair.

You know the one.

The one that all your crap is sitting on...

At some point, the chair stopped being a chair and it became... where things go.

One thing gets put there temporarily, then another, then another, until one day you realize you haven't actually sat in that chair in months.

SPOILER - your business has this too!

- A desktop covered in files because you'll organize them later
- A spreadsheet someone created three years ago that somehow became "the system"
- Sticky notes with important reminders
- Flagged emails you'll deal with when things slow down
- Slack messages you sent yourself because it was faster than putting the information where it actually belongs
- A notebook full of "important stuff" that nobody else can make sense of

This goes bad, I'm too lazy to put it into this caption so if you want to know why it can be bad... go read the blog (www.tvaptbo.com/blogs/temporary) ... but if you just want tips on how to fix it... here you go:

1. Start by asking why the chair exists
2. Give everything a permanent home
3. Make the right thing the easiest thing
4. Get it out of your head
5. Build the habit of replacing chairs

Temporary is fine... as long as it doesn't become permanent!
