The other morning while on our daily girls chat (my mom, Jaz, Siobhan and I), I dropped my phone straight into the sink full of water...

DISASTER!

I had a busy day ahead and did not have time for that... also... I didn't have any rice 😬😬

My cat like reflexes got it out of the water quickly and my brain started processing what to do next...

Immediately I thought "swap the SIM into my old phone and let this one dry" it'll be fine.

Then the panic... Oh s**t... my photos. Although I upgraded my Google Photos, so I had more storage... BUT I had been slacking on setting it up.

Not once during the panic did I worry about work - even though I was leaving on a road trip and planned to work from the car. Why? Cause I have everything set up properly in my business so a SIM swap was all I needed.

Personally, on the other hand it taught me some good lessons:

1. Don't put your phone near the sink when it's full of water
2. Buy some rice
3. Back up your photos

Thank God for systems or it could have been bad.

P.S. my phone is waterproof so once the charging port dried it was back to normal. Also, I have since backed up my photos.

I had four different people this week tell me that the timing "isn't right" for things they wanted to do...

One has parents coming to visit, one just started a new job, one isn't sure about the market and one just... isn't sure.

I get it! Life's busy and there's never a perfect time to do anything.

BUUUUTTT here's the thing... the timing is never going to be perfect. There will always be something, and the people who are waiting for the right time? Still waiting.

Meanwhile the people who just started, figured it out as they went, and now have something to show for it... they didn't have perfect timing either.... they just decided that done was better than perfect.

Sooooo... what are we waiting for?

In business you don't have to know how to do everything...

But you certainly should know the basics of how it functions!

I have 45 questions for you in today's blog... let's see how many you can answer.

Come back and let me know - how many can you answer?

I was on a call with a client trying to figure out the best way to take automatic payments....

Instead of having to send an invoice through QBO and wait for payment, she wanted people to be able to click the program, buy it and ta-da.

But, at the same time she also wanted to automate a bunch of the product…

Did I say “you should wait until the entire thing is ready before you take a payment”? NOPE
Did I say “Ok let’s rush to get this done tomorrow so it works”? Also nope!

I said “I don't want to rush figuring out the right thing just because you wanted a way to take money.”

So, what did we do?

We set up a short term Stripe payment link so she can take payment, while we start to map out what the long term process is going to look like.

It’s ok to come up with a short term solution while you build the best system for you.

Hi. It’s Siobhan. Yes, the sister.... Yes, I’ve hijacked this account again.

Last Friday marked 3 YEARS since Olivia completed the Live Hard Program.

Which is honestly ridiculous… because if you know anything about that program, you know most people don’t even make it through the first phase.

This isn’t a cute little “drink more water and go for a walk” situation.

This is discipline.
This is structure.
This is doing the thing when you absolutely do not feel like doing the thing.

And she didn’t just start it, she FINISHED it. Not just the first 75 day phase. THE. ENTIRE. PROGRAM

She didn’t leave that version of herself back there.

You see it in how she runs her business.
You see it in how she sets boundaries.
You see it in how she shows up, even on the days where everything feels like a lot.

That level of consistency comes from commitment , not motivation.

It comes from someone who decided a long time ago that quitting just wasn’t an option.

So yeah… wildly impressive doesn’t even cover it.

Also Olivia, if you’re reading this…

I will continue to NOT do this program, but I will happily enjoy the benefits of your consistency and commitment to systems and processes.

Being a business owner is A LOT.

You’re making decisions all day, answering questions, fixing things that shouldn’t be broken, and keeping everything moving… AND making sure to feed yourself, get in your steps, spend time with your family and all the other things that humans have to do.
You’re doing the job of multiple people.

And somehow… you still expect yourself to do it all perfectly.

I call bulls**t.

Of course things feel messy sometimes...

Of course you forget things...

Of course you hit a point where you just don’t have it in you...

Because you're carrying a ridiculous amount of responsibility!!!

Despite your best efforts you're human (not superhuman)... so you'll never be perfect... and that's ok!

Give yourself a little credit for everything you’re doing.

You're a bada$$... don't you forget it!

Since January 2024, I've posted a blog every two weeks...

Today, I haven't.

I've been sick all month and made the decision that posting a blog today, was not more important than my health...

So, today, there is no blog.

Why is there still a post if there's no blog?! Cause the rest of the content is already created and I need a white graphic to go out today to keep my grid pattern consistent or it will bother me... so here we are! (Don't judge me)

While I didn't write an actual blog, I DID write a fun list: 50 lies business owners tell themselves...

I would just put it here to make your life easier... but, I can't because of content limits SOOOO, if you want to laugh and feel seen... check out my lies list at tvaptbo.com/blogs/lies

How many of these lies have you told yourself?

I don't remember most of the processes I create.

That's a problem right?

NOPE! It's definitely not.

I run a business, I have my processes, client's processes, personal processes... that is WAY too many things to remember...

But how do you get things done properly if you don't remember?

Because I document everything that gets repeated...

There are a TON of things that only I do. Noone on my team does it, my clients don't do it, my boyfriend doesn't do it, only I do it...but I still have process documents so that I don't have to store details in my brain.

I want to save my brain power for complex strategic decisions not trying to remember which section of the Google Admin Console I have to go to to change the bookmarks on my client's managed bookmarks or how to file the annual Ontario return that only gets filed once a year.

You don't have to have a team to have process documents. They are just as beneficial to YOU as they are to a team. Will they help if you have a team one day, yes they sure will...but right now they will help YOU.

Start documenting my friend... your brain will thank you.

It's ok to just say no.

I got a call from an "SEO Specialist" who wanted to know if they could email me more information about how they could improve the SEO on our site (specifically around Meta descriptions).

I said "No thanks, I'm not interested"

He said "Does that mean you already have dedicated Meta descriptions?"

I said "It means I'm not interested"

You should have heard the awkward noise he made.. followed by "oh, ok" and he ended the call.

There's a HUGEEE online narrative that as a business owner you have to have a response for every single objection... it's too expensive, I need to think about it, I don't have time... .

Personally, I don't agree with handling objections - because I understand that most people can't just say "No thanks", they use an excuse so they don't have to deal with it - so the objection you're trying to fight... probably isn't real.

SO, the next time you're not interested in something, instead of giving a reason, just say "No thanks, I'm not interested".

If they push back or ask more questions, repeat yourself.

You don't owe anyone an explanation... you're allowed to just say NO.

I LOVE Cheese Sauce...

For my American friends, we don't have Velveeta or any cheeses that just melt into a sauce... so we have to make a roux and grate cheese and make the sauce from scratch...

Anyways, my grandma taught us at a young age how to make it. Every family dinner at her house, I'd help in the kitchen but the cheese sauce was always almost ready... so I knew the full process, but I only ever saw the end stages.

When I started hosting my own dinners I naturally had to have cheese sauce.

I knew the concept of how she did it... so I would wing it. It usually turned out delicious but the process was never smooth...

Sometimes the roux was clumpy and I had to dump it and start again, the consistency was always different ... but we had cheese sauce.

One day while trying a random macaroni and cheese recipe, instead of making the cheese sauce how I always make it, I decided to follow the recipe exactly (usually I use the recipe for the other parts... not the cheese sauce).

It was easy, good consistency and it was delicious, so I decided the next time I needed to make cheese sauce for a dinner, I would follow the same process and measurements (but half the amount).

GAME. CHANGER.

I never realized the mental load that making cheese sauce carried (I'm not joking). It's my favourite, but the inconsistency added so much stress as I tried to manage all the other things I was making.

NOW...

1. Zero thinking is needed
2. The cheese sauce is always clump free - ALWAYS
3. It's the exact same consistency every single time

I've always "known" how to make cheese sauce... so I never bothered to look for a recipe, but this was a GIANT reminder that knowing HOW to do something, and knowing the BEST way to do something, are not the same thing.

I used to think needing things set up a certain way was just a preference...

I thought “I just like being organized.”

NOPE! I was wrong.

For me it's survival... it's not just a "nice to have" preference.

When there's a system - everyone knows what, where, when, why and how... I don't have to waste any brain power and I can go about my day.

The second that structure disappears, my nervous system feels it! Now nothing is predictable and I have to be prepared for 10046 different variables just to make sure s**t gets done.

Now I have to think about EVERYTHING.

- Where things are
- What comes next
- What’s already been done
- What am I forgetting?
- How do we normally do this?

And that's exhausting!

It’s not the work… it’s the amount of mental energy it suddenly takes to do the work.

My nervous system goes from calm… to “what the f #$K Olivia?”

It’ll still get done… but it takes way more out of me than it should... and leaves ZERO room for higher level business strategy.

THAT'S why I care about systems (for me and everyone around me).

YES, I love being organized… because it FEELS sooooo much better than chaos!
