Winters here!!!!
Here's a few tips to make sure your property is ready for the long winter ahead and to avoid any unforeseen issues that could cause property damage:
* make sure water has been shut off to any exterior hose faucets and make sure the hose has been removed - drain the lines - this also applies to "frost free" lines
* check your eavestroughs and downspouts for clogging of debris - leaves etc - if clogged water can not shed off the roof properly and can lead to ice damming.
* if using a wood burning fireplace or appliance, make sure the chimney has been cleaned or inspected for any creosote buildup that could potentially lead to a chimney fire
* check your furnace filter and make sure there are no obstructions in and around your furnace - obstructions can lead to carbon monoxide issues
* check your smoke & CO2 detectors for proper working condition
* if going away the holidays, it is a good idea to shut your water off at the main to prevent any issues from freezing if the power was to go out for an extended period of time
* If you have a high efficiency furnace make sure snow is kept clear around the exterior exhaust pipes - if these get clogged with snow a potential for carbon monoxide build up may occur.
ENJOY THE WINTER MONTHS AND KEEP SAFE!
