The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced that international graduates with a recently expired or expiring post-graduation work permit (PGWP) will quality for an additional or extended work permit to stay longer and gain additional work experience for up to 18 months. The PGWP Program allows international graduates to obtain an open work permit to gain valuable Canadian work experience.

Starting April 6, 2023, these measures will allow PGWP holders who wish to stay longer to opt in to a facilitative process to extend their work permit and will allow Canada to retain high-skilled talent.

Foreign nationals whose PGWP has already expired in 2023 and those who were eligible for the 2022 PGWP facilitative measure will also have the opportunity to apply for an additional 18-month work permit. Those with expired work permits will be able to restore their status, even if they are beyond the 90-day restoration period, and will receive an interim work authorization while awaiting processing of their new work permit application.

Foreign nationals who are in Canada as visitors and who receive a valid job offer will continue to be able to apply for and receive a work permit without having to leave the country. Visitors applying under this public policy who held a work permit within the last 12 months will also continue to be able to request interim work authorization to begin working for their new employer more quickly. Set to expire today, this COVID-era temporary public policy has been extended by 2 years, until February 28, 2025. Leaving this temporary policy in place makes visitors an option for employers in Canada, as many are facing significant labour shortages during this period of economic expansion (Canada.ca)

Effective March 1, 2023, these measures will make it easier for Iranians who wish to extend their temporary status in Canada and to move between temporary streams, allowing Iranians to continue studying, working or visiting family by applying for a new permit from inside Canada. An open work permit pathway will be made available for Iranians already in Canada as well. Applications from Iranians in Canada will also be processed on a priority basis.

The tax filing deadline for your 2022 tax return is May 1, 2023. (May 1, 2023 since April 30 is a Sunday).

The Canada Revenue Agency usually expects individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns by April 30 of every year. If April 30 falls on a weekend, the CRA extends the deadline to the following business day.

If you want to file early, the CRA will open its NETFILE service on February 20, 2023 to electronically receive submitted returns.

Mailed responses must be received or postmarked by the due date, and electronically submitted returns must be submitted by midnight local time of the date they are due.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is designed for skilled individuals who wish to become permanent residents because of their qualifications in a skilled profession.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program minimum requirements include:

• You must have job offers from up to two employers in Canada for at least one year OR a Certificate of Qualification from a provincial or territorial agency.
• You must show proof of basic language proficiency from a recognized language testing agency proving that the candidate reaches the minimal level.
• You must have obtained twenty-four months of qualified work experience in the skilled trade in the last five years.
• You must be able to demonstrate the skills and experience and that you have performed the essential duties of the occupation.

Provincial Nominee Program
This program allows you to immigrate to Canada if you are a skilled or semi-skilled worker and have a valid job offer that is needed in a particular province or territory. Each province or territory has its own PNP with in-demand occupation lists intended to meet the individual needs of its labour market. This will require that you send an Expression of Interest to relocate to the relevant region.

On February 2, 2023, the IRCC held the fourth Express Entry draw for 2023.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invited 3,300 applicants with a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 489. For the first time since Express Entry began in 2015, the draw was only open to candidates in the Federal Skilled Worker Program. This was the second program-specific draw of 2023, after the results on February 1st, in which only applicants who had previously won provincial nomination were eligible for an ITA.
