You hear us talking about the "circular economy" a lot but what does it even mean?!

The circular economy is an economic system that phases out waste and pollution by using what we already have. Within this system, products and materials are kept in circulation through processes like maintenance, reuse, refurbishment, remanufacture, recycling, and composting.

October is Circular Economy Month and we're excited to share more information about how you can participate in a circular system here in Nova Scotia.

The Pictou County Shared Services Authority has reported a surplus of about 180-thousand dollars in its latest financial statements.

The authority received a clean audit, with much of the surplus attributed to the partial implementation of extended producer responsibility, or EPR.

Under the program, producers of printed paper and packaging are responsible for the recycling of those materials.

The mayor told Pictou Town Council the change reduced some costs for municipalities, while the full amount had previously been included in the budget because the timing of the program's implementation was uncertain.

The Shared Services Authority approved its 2026 consolidated financial statements. Warden Parker was also returned as chair, with Mayor Lenny White serving as vice-chair.
