A perfect way to kick off National Indigenous History Month!
Yesterday marked the official unveiling of the new sign at the Aaron Roote Memorial Youth Centre, and it was an incredible reminder of what can happen when a community comes together around a shared purpose.
We were honoured to welcome Chief Conrad Ritchie, Councillor Lester Anoquot, Kayla Roote (Aaron’s sister), artist Emily Kewageshig, and many members of the community to celebrate this special occasion, share a meal, and tell stories about Aaron and the impact he continues to have on those around him.
Chief Ritchie spoke about the importance of the Youth Centre as a safe place for young people to gather, grow, and build a strong future. Emily shared the story behind the artwork and the thoughtful process that brought it to life. The final design was inspired by the original sign concept created by Aaron’s father and was further shaped through conversations with Aaron’s family and local youth. In keeping with the spirit of the Centre, the youth themselves had the opportunity to vote on the final design.
Almost two years in the making, this project was never just about replacing a sign. It was about creating something meaningful that honours Aaron’s memory, reflects the voices of the community, and celebrates Indigenous culture through the beautiful work of a talented local artist.
The result is far more than a sign. It is a story. It is a tribute. And it is a welcoming symbol for an important place that continues to provide a safe and supportive space for youth.
