Gilakas’la! Wiksús

Last week we came together at Kwa’lilas Hotel for a meaningful cultural workshop led by Lucy Scow, HR Cultural Coordinator, creating space for conversation, reflection, and learning as a team.

Our work is guided by the House Posts of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations, teachings that shape how we lead, how we partner, and how we work together across K’awat’si Economic Development Corporation.

During the workshop, Lucy brought these teachings to life through engaging discussions and real workplace scenarios, helping us reflect on how we can carry them into the way we communicate, make decisions, support one another, and work through challenges together.

Maya’xala – Respect One Another
Hutilala – Listen to One Another
Galgapolalła – Lift Each Other Up, Link Arms
Ga’walapa – Helping Each Other

These principles guide us on site, in the office, and in the community. It was a meaningful opportunity for us to learn together and deepen our understanding of how these teachings can continue to guide the way we show up for one another every day.

Gilakas’la to Lucy for sharing her knowledge and guiding such a thoughtful and engaging session with our team.

And the learning continues. We came together for another workshop yesterday, and we look forward to sharing more from that session soon.

Halakas mo-otsla (See you for now).

Gilakas’la! Wiksús

From June 15–18, the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Big House welcomed hundreds to mark a historic milestone more than 60 years in the making, a celebration rooted in culture, tradition, and community.

Gilakas'la to the Elders, Knowledge Keepers, volunteers, community members, and KEDC team members whose generosity helped bring this celebration to life. As the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nation's economic development arm, KEDC was honoured to support this historic celebration and stand alongside the Nation for this significant milestone.

In the days leading up to the opening, volunteers participated in drum making and cultural teachings organized by our HR Cultural Coordinator, Lucy Scow. Many created a ma̱nat̕si (drum) and yada̱n (rattle) for the first time while learning their cultural significance. The drums were later used during the Big House Opening ceremonies, making the experience even more meaningful. In the Big House and ceremonial settings, their steady rhythm helps guide singers, strengthen dancers, and connect people through shared energy, culture, and spirit.

For KEDC volunteers across all business lines, it was more than event support, it was an opportunity to learn, connect with community members of all ages, and deepen their understanding of Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw culture through shared experiences and stories.

Reflecting on the experience, Lucy Scow shared:

"Being part of the cultural component of this historic opening was an incredible honour. Seeing nearly half of the volunteers come from KEDC filled me with pride, as so many embraced the opportunity to learn, serve, and connect with our community. It gave me hope that this Big House will continue to be a place where our culture is lived, shared, and strengthened for generations to come. Thank you all for your hard work and for being part of this journey."

Gilakas'la to everyone who made this special moment possible.
