Charging your phone, laptop, or power tools may be part of your everyday routine, but how you charge them matters.
Fire Prevention Week, October 4–10, 2026, highlights these everyday habits with the National Fire Protection Association’s theme: “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower!” The Argyle Fire Department encourages residents to take a few simple steps to help prevent battery fires at home.
Make safe charging part of your routine
Lithium-ion batteries power many devices we use daily. If damaged or charged improperly, these batteries can overheat, catch fire, or explode.
Follow these tips when plugging in:
* Use the right charger. Choose the cord and charger supplied with your device or a replacement approved by the manufacturer.
* Charge on a hard, flat surface. Use a table or desk. Beds, pillows, and couches can trap heat.
* Unplug when fully charged. Avoid leaving devices connected longer than needed.
* Keep exits clear. Charge larger items, such as e-bikes, scooters, and power tools, outside when possible, and never block an escape route.
* Watch for warning signs. Stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells strange, or makes popping or hissing sounds.
* Recycle batteries responsibly
Lithium-ion batteries do not belong in household trash or regular recycling bins, where they can start fires. Take unwanted batteries to an appropriate battery recycling location.
