Architects generally receive little, if any, education in acoustics. In formulating design goals for projects, acoustics is a low priority – except when it is fundamental to a building’s function (e.g. a concert hall). This is a missed opportunity. Studies indicate the Taos Hum is audible to at least 2% of large sample groups, with participants hearing it at frequencies ranging from 32 to 80Hz. One subject heard it from 48 km (30 miles) away. The hum was heard equally across genders, and middle-agers were likeliest to pick it up.
