In Memory of Maple Acres Gulliver
May 2008 – February 2026
Gulliver was born in a field beside the house—a jet-black foal marked with a small white snip on his forelock, and the last foal ever born at Maple Acres. From the beginning, he carried both presence and gentleness, traits that would define him throughout his life.
For our family, Gulliver was far more than a horse. He was a trusted partner, a steady teacher, and a constant companion. Broken to ride with patience and care, he embodied trust in its purest form. He gave confidence to beginners, carried children safely, and welcomed every rider with the same calm willingness. Whether plodding around the riding ring with a young child or being shown at the Merrickville Fair, Gulliver met every moment with quiet strength and grace.
He traveled with us to ride with friends, welcomed others to our farm for trail rides through the bush and back lanes, and became part of countless shared memories. He was steady on the trails, forgiving of mistakes, and endlessly kind—traits that earned him the affection of everyone who knew him.
Gulliver was also a working horse in the truest sense. He was trained to drive, pulled wood from the bush, and demonstrated the remarkable strength and capability that Percherons are known for. His combination of gentleness and power—along with his connection to forestry work—inspired the name of our company, Black Horse Road and Forestry Trailers.
Losing Gulliver is a profound loss. He was a once-in-a-lifetime horse whose presence shaped our lives and our business in ways that words can scarcely capture. His legacy lives on in the values he represented: trust, strength, patience, and heart.
Rest easy, Gulliver. You will always be part of our story.
