More than a century ago, King Street was bustling with grocers, butchers, bakers, barbers, tailors and merchants, each helping build the community we know today.

In 1896, Cal Whitney operated a bicycle repair shop in the Brouse Block, now home to Irving H Miller Insurance Brokers, with its own 74-year history in Prescott. Across King Street, the former Harding's Pharmacy is home to Miller's Barber Shop.

Different businesses. Different generations. The same entrepreneurial spirit.

This Small Business Week, we're celebrating the people who built downtown Prescott and those continuing its story today!

From breweries and bakeries to boutiques, Prescott's small business story has always been one of change and opportunity.

In 1896, Tyrie's bakeshop stood across from the Prescott Brewing and Malting Company, a reminder of the businesses that once shaped King Street's west end.

Today, that same historic building is home to Once426 Clothing Co., where a new generation of entrepreneurship continues the tradition.

For generations, King Street has been a place where small businesses grow, evolve and make their mark on Prescott.

Where the town's Post Office once stood, the Metropolitan department store later became a downtown landmark. Today, that location is home to W.L. Peters, a multi-generational family business with more than half a century on King Street, moving to its current storefront in the early 2000s.

October 19–25, 2026 is Small Business Week, a national celebration of the entrepreneurs and small businesses that drive our economy and bring our communities to life!

Led by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), this year's theme, "It's a two-speed world now, fast or finished," highlights the importance of adapting, innovating and finding new opportunities for growth in a rapidly changing economy.

Here in Prescott, our small businesses are at the heart of our community. From longtime downtown favourites and family businesses to new entrepreneurs bringing fresh ideas, their ambition, resilience and investment help shape Prescott's future.

Kevin Rivette is back at Renegadz Restaurant & Bar Lounge for another Saturday night in the Downtown Prescott Scene.

Kevin’s shows are built around familiar favourites, audience requests and plenty of interaction along the way. Birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions are all fair game, and if there’s a song you want to hear, chances are he’ll be happy to work it into the night.

He’ll be at Renegadz from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, with four hours of live music, dinner and drinks to carry you through a fall evening downtown.

Renegadz also has new menu and drink additions to check out while you’re there.

If you can’t find a friend to join, these workshops are great opportunities to meet new like-minded people within your community. We’re hoping to enjoy the last of the warm weather by hosting our workshop on the outdoor patio, but if the weather doesn’t agree we will move the fun indoors.
