A great presentation made by biologist/ecologist Michelle Connolly of Conservation North recently at the University of Northern BC. British Columbians need to be aware that our forest practices in BC have collapsed most of our provinces wildlife species. Clearcut harvesting practices followed by replanting monculture conifer plantations, including changing to lodgepole pine in sub-boreal spruce regions like the central interior has lead to substantive loss of biodiversity, habitat, shelter and food sources for our wildlife species. Since BC started clearcut logging in the mid 1960's, we departed from anything remotely connected to sustainable forestry.

With the spread of industrial forestry across the planet, where is future old growth and habitat for wildlife going to come from? Industrial forestry destro...

Are BC’s Forests Running Out of Trees?

The province prides itself on its sustainable forestry. But even industry is now sounding the alarm.

Here's a quote from the 1976 Royal Commission Report on forestry that I included in my attached report to my caucus from 2020. We should not be shocked that our forest sector is shutting down. I included my thoughts on what a new forest sector should look like at the end of my report./

“The old-growth timber on which our industry has been built was often of exceptionally high quality, capable of manufacture into products that command premium prices in world markets. As this stock is depleted (and it is appropriate to refer to it as stock, since it is not reproducible within any meaningful planning horizon), much of the special advantage this province’s timber has enjoyed will be lost.”

British Columbia’s new normal should not be wildfires and widespread flooding threatening the lives and safety of our citizens. It should not be the extirpated wildlife populations or depleted salmon and steelhead runs. It should not be the loss of hundreds of thousands of songbirds every year.

Over 20 million hectares of primary forests have been clearcut in BC with no consideration to all the values of our forests. From this day forward, the values of a complete forest needs to be considered in finding the balance in resource development.
