Alberta has one of the best charitable giving tax credit systems in Canada. Do you know how it works?
For the first $200 you give to charity you receive a tax credit of 75% of that amount, that's $150! Remember, that is a tax credit not a tax deduction. Tax credit's lower your taxes payable, tax deductions lower your income that you pay tax on.
If you donate more than $200, the credit you receive is equal to 50% of the donation above $200. It gets even better if you make more than 253,414 of income in a year. For every dollar you donate above your income of 253,414 you receive a 54% tax credit instead of a 50%.
Let us break that down.
You make 260,000 in 2025 and have charitable tax receipts for 10,000.
The first $200 nets you a $150 tax credit.
That leaves 9,800 to be applied for the 54% and 50% tax credit. 260,000 - 253,414 is 6,586. Now 6,586 that can be applied at the 54% tax credit of $3,556, leaving a remaining 3,214 applied at the 50% tax credit of 1,607.
That is a lot of numbers. In short what does it mean for you. At 260,000 of income with a 10,000 tax donation, would net a total tax credit 5,313. Instead of paying 84,624 in tax for 2025 you would pay 79,311 in tax.
