Soil is complex and unpredictable due to its non-uniform environment, consisting of minerals, organic matter, water, and air, which interact differently across locations.

🔸Electrical Resistivity: Damp, clay-rich soils have low resistivity, facilitating electrical current flow and accelerating corrosion.
🔸Aeration: Variations in oxygen levels create differential aeration cells, causing localized corrosion.
🔸Microbial Activity: Sulfate-reducing bacteria in anaerobic soils produce corrosive hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) which attacks steel.

The corrosivity of water depends on its chemical makeup, temperature, and flow rate.

🔸Freshwater: Hardness (calcium and magnesium) can protect against corrosion, but dissolved oxygen is the main factor.
🔸Seawater: High salt content (about 3.5%) makes it a conductive electrolyte, leading to rapid galvanic corrosion and pitting.
🔸Distilled/High-Purity Water: Very pure water can be aggressive, lacking minerals and seeking to dissolve ions from metal surfaces.
