ARE WE DEVELOPING PLAYERS… OR RETAINING THEM? 🏒

It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.

We’re seeing it more and more at the U18 and junior levels.

A player earns an opportunity to attend a junior camp, and during the tryout, his U18 coach is calling to find out if he’s coming back.

Let him earn his spot. Let him find out if he’s ready.

We see the same thing at the junior level. A player gets an opportunity to explore the next level, and sometimes the message coming back is, “You’re not ready yet.”

But that raises a bigger question:

Is retention starting to get in the way of development?

Recently, we had a player move from a CSSHL program to junior hockey. The program wanted to keep him and felt he wasn’t ready to make that jump.

He earned the opportunity and moved on.

The response? Total silence.

No congratulations. No recognition that one of their players had earned an opportunity at the next level.

To me, that’s where we need to remember what development hockey is supposed to be about.

If a player earns an opportunity to take the next step, we should encourage him to find out if he’s ready.

That doesn’t mean every player needs to move up.

For one player, another year of U18 might be exactly what he needs. For another, it’s time for junior hockey. Another player might benefit from an extra year of junior before pursuing college.

Every player’s path is different.

And sometimes we won’t know if a player is ready for the next challenge until we actually give him the opportunity to try.

If your goal is to get drafted, understand what scouts are actually evaluating.

Every scout, team and organization will have their own evaluation process. There are obviously many factors that go into identifying and selecting a player.

But across most scouting conversations, these five intangibles consistently matter:

🏒 Development
🧠 Hockey IQ
💪 Compete
🤝 Character & Coachability
📈 Consistency

These aren’t the only things scouts look for—but they are some of the qualities that can separate players when talent levels are similar.

And that’s why we believe players should spend less time worrying about “How do I get seen?” and more time asking:

“What do I need to improve to become the player teams want?”

Because exposure might get you on a scout’s list.

Development is what gets you off it—and onto a roster.

🏒 Congratulations to Caleb R. Landry on being selected to the Hockey New Brunswick U15 High Performance Team! 👏

Caleb is a talented young goaltender with a tremendous upside. He plays with confidence, uses his excellent skating ability to get square to every shot, and competes relentlessly for every puck. His work ethic, athleticism, and passion for the game continue to drive his development.

We’re excited to see Caleb continue his journey this season at Hill Hockey | The Hill Academy and are proud to see his hard work recognized with this well-deserved selection to the Hockey New Brunswick U15 High Performance Team.

🚨 COMMITMENT ALERT 🚨

Congratulations to Marty Hackenberg on signing with HK Nitra in Slovakia! 🇸🇰🥅

After two outstanding seasons with Rothersay Netherwoods, Marty had multiple opportunities on the table, but we believe HK Nitra is an excellent fit for his continued development.

Marty is a big, athletic goaltender who competes every single day. His natural athleticism, strong work ethic, and ability to make key saves consistently give his team a chance to win.

HK Nitra has built a strong reputation for developing elite talent, with NHL players such as Šimon Nemec, Adam Sýkora, and Tomáš Chrenko all coming through the organization.

We’re incredibly proud of Marty and everything he has accomplished. We can’t wait to see what’s next as he begins this exciting new chapter.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve spent a lot of time talking with coaches, general managers, scouts, families, and people throughout the hockey community.

One thing continues to stand out:

The hockey process can be complicated, and the more educated players and families are, the better decisions they can make.

At Perfection Hockey Group, our goal is to simplify the process. We want to help players and families understand what coaches, GMs, and scouts are truly evaluating when they are looking at a player.

Yes, skill matters. Yes, production matters. But recruiting is about much more than goals, assists, and statistics.

Every coach is asking themselves:

“Is this player the right fit for our program?”

Because at the end of the day, teams are investing in people.

For example, NCAA programs are often bringing players into their environment for four years. They want players who can contribute on the ice, but also represent their program, be great teammates, and fit their culture.

Junior hockey can be a little different. Players may only spend a season or two with a program before moving on to the next opportunity. That means coaches are still looking for players who can help their team win, improve every day, and be positive members of their organization.

The questions coaches ask during the evaluation process often go beyond hockey ability:

• Are they coachable?
• Do they compete?
• Do they take accountability?
• Are they willing to improve?
• Do they have strong habits away from the rink?
• Are they surrounded by a support system that helps them grow?

Hockey is a small community. Your reputation, character, and habits matter.

Our goal is simple: educate players and families, create a smoother process, and help them make informed decisions throughout their hockey journey.

Because at the end of the day… The evaluation process goes far beyond the player on the ice. It’s about finding the right fit.

We’re excited to welcome Isabelle Michaud to Perfection Hockey Group!

Isabelle is a complete offensive player with the ability to impact the game in multiple ways. She has an elite release with a hard, accurate shot, exceptional vision that allows her to create offense for her teammates, and the composure to make the right play under pressure. Combined with her skating, skill, and compete level, she has all the tools to be an impact player at every level.

As a freshman, Isabelle led the University of Maine women’s hockey team in scoring—an impressive accomplishment and a sign of what’s ahead. We believe she has the talent, work ethic, and mindset to compete for a spot in the Professional Women’s Hockey League in the future.

Raised in Drummond, a small village of just over 700 people, Isabelle is proof that your hometown doesn’t determine your future. If you’re willing to trust the process and consistently put in the work, opportunities will follow.

What stands out most about Isabelle is her character. She does the work when no one is watching, leads by example, stays humble, and is committed to improving every day. She’s an outstanding role model for the next generation of athletes.

Alex is a highly intelligent, smooth-skating defenseman whose game is built on strong habits, detail, and efficiency. His ability to recognize threats, eliminate second-chance opportunities, and make smart defensive reads makes him a reliable presence in all three zones.

With the puck, Alex keeps the game simple and effective. He moves pucks efficiently, supports the transition game, and has the ability to contribute offensively without sacrificing his defensive responsibilities. His skating ability and hockey sense allow him to evade pressure, create time and space, and make plays under difficult conditions.
