“What Nuclear Fire Protection Can Teach Industrial Emergency Response” looks at CSA N393:22 and argues that, although written for nuclear facilities, its Fire Response Capability framework provides an excellent roadmap for high-hazard industrial operations such as mines, refineries, chemical facilities and power stations.

The article challenges organizations to build emergency response programs from the risk outward, rather than from the training inward. It explores the importance of incipient response by operators and maintenance personnel, risk-based staffing and equipment, NFPA 1081 competency, ongoing training and requalification, realistic drills, and measurable response performance.

Ultimately, the article argues that certificates, courses and an ERT roster do not prove emergency response capability. A strong program identifies what can happen, determines what responders must be able to accomplish, and then regularly demonstrates that the entire system actually works.

Something no Fire Department should have to deal with. Thoughts are with the community, fellow emergency responders, and of course the family and firefighter involved.

Slow down

On Thursday at approximately 3:00 p.m., a truck was involved in a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 37 north of Shaunavon.

The Town of Shaunavon and SDFR can confirm that the vehicle was a Shaunavon Fire Department truck containing a solo occupant. The driver was transported to the hospital by STARS air ambulance with injuries described as serious in nature.

Further official updates will be released as reliable information is provided. We ask the public to respect the privacy of the member's family and avoid speculation while the investigation continues.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all surrounding departments, first responders, and on-scene personnel for their rapid assistance and continued support. Please keep our firefighter and our department in your thoughts.

Quint Services is looking for a Fire Truck Operator who is available August 23 through September 8 to assist with a project in the Regina area.

This opportunity would be a great fit for someone looking to build their resume and gain experience working in an industrial emergency response environment. If you've recently completed an NFPA 1001 program, or are new to an industrial ERT or Mine Rescue team, or simply want to broaden your experience, we'd love to hear from you.

That said, experienced operators are absolutely welcome to apply as well.

Requirements:
Experience operating fire apparatus (pump operation experience is an asset)
Valid driver's license
Professional attitude and willingness to work safely as part of a team in an industrial setting

A big challenge for many volunteer fire departments in Saskatchewan is training with SCBA.

Some departments have aging SCBAs. Some only have enough cylinders for one evolution before they're empty.

Some don't have a compressor. Some simply don't want to put unnecessary wear and tear on their frontline equipment.
