Weโve seen a lot of good questions about how fibre internet works, how much capacity it has, how it compares with other options, and why construction can take so long.
Here are some helpful answers.

Fibre does not work like old copper telephone cable, where each customer needed their own pair of wires.
A single fibre strand can carry a tremendous amount of data and can serve a group of homes through fibre splitters located throughout the network. Each customer still receives their own fibre connection from the network to their property and has their own optical modem.
A fibre cable may also contain many individual strands. The number of strands in a cable does not directly represent the number of customers it can serve.

Modern fibre networks are specifically designed to serve many customers efficiently.
Each part of the network is planned around the number of homes being connected, the speeds being offered and the amount of capacity available.
We monitor network usage and can add equipment, activate additional fibre strands or divide customers into smaller groups as demand grows.
Adding customers does not automatically mean everyoneโs service will become slow. Proper network design, available capacity and ongoing upgrades are what matter.

The fibre cable itself has an enormous amount of potential capacity.
As technology improves, much of the network can be upgraded by replacing the electronic equipment connected to the fibre rather than digging up and replacing the buried cable.
The fibre being installed today is intended to support increasingly faster services for many years to come, including multi-gigabit speeds as those services become practical and necessary.

Starlink can be a useful option, especially where no wired service is available or where portability is important.
Fibre is permanent infrastructure built directly to the property. It provides very low latency, consistent performance, dependable capacity and a clear path to much higher speeds in the future.
For customers who work from home, operate a business, stream heavily, game online or rely on their connection every day, those qualities can be very important.
Having fibre connected or available may also make a property more attractive to future buyers.
The right choice depends on how and where the service will be used. Satellite service offers portability, while fibre provides a permanent connection built for long-term performance and growth.

Building a new fibre network from scratch is a major construction project with many stages.
Depending on the area, the work may include:
โข Engineering and route planning
โข Utility approvals and permits
โข Locating existing underground infrastructure
โข Directional drilling, plowing
โข Coordinating contractors, equipment and materials
โข Installing cabinets, fibre cable and network equipment
โข Building connections to the wider internet
โข Splicing, testing and activating the network
โข Installing the final fibre connection to each property
Weather, ground conditions, permit timelines, contractor availability and unexpected underground obstacles can all affect the schedule.
We begin collecting registrations early so we can see where service is wanted, plan construction routes, order materials and organize installations.
Registering early helps us build an accurate construction plan, but it does not always mean service can be activated immediately.
We know waiting can be frustrating, especially after signing up. Our goal is to provide realistic updates as each project moves through planning, construction and testing.
