From our family to yours, we thank all of you for being awesome MudRockers!

Our physical location has been closed a few days now. I begin my new adventure with Twin Valley Co-op as their IT Manager soon. Once I have settled into my new position and the team is back from their vacations, we will begin to take new bookings for services and repairs. Existing client business computer service will be likely the first back going along with phone and tablet repairs and then depending on our ability to cover everything, expand to Premium Computer Care service then on to service for existing residential clients.

Also, please note that I intended to port the shop number to a more affordable platform. It appears that returning the equipment ended up triggering an account closure and it appears that the number may not be recoverable.

Thanks again everyone! Thank you to those who helped move out of the shop and those who have made MudRock great!

It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing the closure of the retail location of MudRock Technologies at the end of July!

I (Andy) have taken a position with a local business who requires full time I.T. support. With a few factors leading into the choice to pursue this, including the realization that MudRock is only as durable as I am, and that there is a rapid change in the technology field, much of which being triggered by the current pandemic and what will come of the pandemic, that it was time to make sure I am looking out for my family and our future.

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will begin to have clearance sales as well as selling fixtures and equipment we will not need going forward. Please stay tuned for more details including some awesome deals on refurbished systems and stock.
We will continue providing services during the month of July, and we will also begin to transition to providing services remotely and on-site after hours and on weekends by appointment. While how this will be executed has not been finalized, we will announce further details as the month progresses. We will also be looking to what products we will continue stocking for drop off and pick up in the future. Currently, we anticipate we will continue offering ink, toner, cables and some networking equipment for the foreseeable future, especially items needed for business continuity. For example, those who have purchased Pantum printers, we will continue having a small stock of the toner for these units. We will also be available for custom orders and drop-ship orders. We are also in negotiations (and still open for further negotiations) for the possibility of a mini-store for either weekend and evenings, or similar.

We appreciate all of you awesome MudRockers who have been top notch clients for the past 13 years! Thank you!

Please note: Any items which have been completed repair or waiting for pick up and notification made prior to 14 days from today, if not picked up or arrangements made by July 15th, will be disposed of or sold to recoup the cost of time and parts involved. Any items dropped off from here in, will need to be picked up and paid in full within 14 days of notice of completion or arrangements made otherwise during discussion. This may change further upon further evaluation.

Do you know the difference between a hard drive and solid state drive is?

Computers have been using hard drives (HDDs) for decades now for storing your operating system, programs and personal files. They are a mechanical device, magnetic and much like a record player but much smaller. Because everything relies on physical movement, they can be slow in many instances while the head (similar to a record needle) moves to position and the data spins under the head. They are very sensitive to impacts as well, which really didn't lend well to their use in laptops. I can tell you I have seen a lot of failed hard drives; One with a drop of less than 6 inches.

Solid state drives are more like the storage found in your iPhones/iPads, but even more advanced. They are not mechanical in nature, but electrical. They are faster; In many instances in factors of 10x and even more. While a hard drive is similar to a record player, a solid state drive can be more likened to a massive bank of electical light switches. Their longevity boils down to how many times you write data (or flip the light switch), not how many times you read data (Or look at the light bulb.) They are much better at shock resistance as well. Solid state drives have been around for a while, but only recently become affordable enough to include in new systems.

Attached is a video of speed comparisons between 4 drive types:
nVME solid state drive (Used on new builds with some native benefits)
SATA SSD (A common solid state drop-in replacement for old hard drives)
SSHD solid state hybrid drive (A drive that combines solid and hard drive - We don't recommend these)
SATA HDD (The older mechanical hard drive)

It is stark the speed differences between the two types. While there is still room for hard drives in the world for large storage in low-sped scenarios (And their cost per gigabyte is still cheaper), SSDs will take over.

MudRock offers solid state upgrades for most desktop and laptops. They are a great way to squeeze extra life and performance out of your older hardware. Please inquire with us about solid state upgrades.

As for new laptops and desktops from MudRock, we only choose laptops and prebuilt desktops with solid state drives and build new systems with solid state drives due to their performance, durability and power savings! (We will add a hard drive where requested or added as a second storage drive!)

Hello everyone!

Andy will be away on recovery from surgery for a few weeks. The shop will still be open with John, Marion and Kim in shop. Please note that our ability to perform some services may be limited. Computer clean ups, virus removals, computer hardware issues, phone screen replacements as well as other services will be available as well as curbside sales of non-essential goods. Please call and we will let you know what we can do for you in the interim!

Our hours during this time will be Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm!
