🐻 Bear Safety in Riding Mountain National Park 🐻

Bears are out and very active right now across Riding Mountain National Park, feeding on fresh spring foods like dandelions and other greens. While it can be exciting to see a bear, it is important to stay safe and give wildlife the space they need.

👀 If you see a bear
• Stop and stay calm. Do not run.

If the bear is unaware of you
• Quietly move away

If the bear is aware of you
• Stay calm and speak calmly
• Back away slowly
• Make yourself look bigger and stay in a group
• Pick up small children
• Give the bear space or wait for it to move on

🚴‍♂️ Cycling and running
• Slow down in dense areas and around corners
• Make noise and stay alert
• Don't wear earbuds to avoid surprise encounters

🔊 Make noise
• Call out, clap, sing or talk loudly
• Be extra cautious in thick vegetation, near streams, and in low visibility
• Bears focused on feeding may not notice you

🐾 Watch for signs
• Tracks, droppings, diggings, torn logs, overturned rocks
• Leave the area if signs are fresh

🐕 Dogs
• Keep dogs leashed and under control
• Dogs can trigger defensive behavior

🧑‍🤝‍🧑Travel smart
• Hike in groups
• Keep children close
• Stay on marked trails and travel during daylight

🌼 Enjoy the park and stay bear aware 🐻🌿

Campfire safety tips.

Campfire safety starts by selecting a good site to build your fire:

🔥 Check https://www.albertafirebans.ca/ to ensure a fire is permitted.
🔥 Use fire pits or fire rings, and if none are available find a spot that is clear of any vegetation, is sheltered from the wind, and close to a water source.
🔥 Keep your campfire cozy -- just big enough to warm your hands and cook your meal, and small enough to stay in control.
Ensure you have a shovel and enough water to fully extinguish your fire.
🔥 Supervise your campfire at all times.

Before you leave, make sure your fire is out 💦.
1. Let it burn down within the fire pit and spread the embers around to expose material that is still burning.
2. Soak the fire with water, then stir it.
3. Soak the fire again and stir it until you can no longer see smoke or steam and the ashes are cool to the touch.

🐻 Bear Safety 101 🐻

If you encounter a bear in Banff National Park chances are, it’s moving through its home range, searching for food and taking the easiest path… sometimes the same trail you are. Aggressive or curious encounters are rare. But the risk is never zero.

That’s why carrying bear spray matters.
✔️ Keep it on your hip or chest not buried in your pack.
✔️ Make sure everyone in your group has easy access.
✔️ Know how to use it before you hit the trail.

Bear spray is proven to be effective in deterring aggressive bear behaviour but only if you can reach it quickly when it counts.

Prepare before you head out this weekend.

Prepare before you head out this weekend.

Black bears are active near the Canmore Nordic Centre trails right now - and at least one sow has cubs-of-the-year with her. 🐻

That changes the risk profile considerably. A bear with newborns is not a bear you want to surprise on a narrow trail, and the Nordic Centre has enough twists and turns to make surprise encounters genuinely possible.

Alberta Parks has an advisory in place, but advisories don't mean closed - they mean go prepared. Bear spray accessible (not buried in your pack), noise made consistently, pets on a leash, and food secured.

If you're heading out there this week, what's your bear spray situation - do you actually carry it, or is it the one still in the car from two summers ago?

Bear safety tips. A reminder to carry bear spray.

⚠️🐻 It’s spring and bears are active in the valley bottom.

On May 28, a young (3-year-old) grizzly bear bluff-charged two different groups of hikers on the Old Fort Point Trail (Trail 1).

Take extra caution and follow these safety tips while you are on the trails:

◾ Travel in groups and make noise.
◾ Tune into your surroundings. Remove your headset.
◾ Keep your dog on-leash and close to you. Dogs can provoke bears to become aggressive.
◾ If you encounter wildlife, back away. Return the way you came.
◾ Carry bear spray. Know how to use it: https://ow.ly/Gmp650Z5GNw
◾ Report all aggressive wildlife encounters to Parks Canada Dispatch: 780-852-6155
