At the Paris Air Show, the Honourable François-Philippe Ch*****ne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced an investment of $350 million to support Canada’s new Initiative for Sustainable Aviation Technology (INSAT) aimed at accelerating the green industrial transformation of the aerospace industry.
Key points:
• International governments and industry bodies recognize the goal of achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 as integral to maintaining the 1.5°C global warming targets of the Paris Climate accord.
• The Government of Canada has set binding commitments to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 in the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act and has outlined this as part of Canada’s Aviation Climate Action Plan 2022–2030.
• To accelerate the development of sustainable aviation technologies in Canada to support global, national and industry commitments to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, the Government has established INSAT, a pan-Canadian non-profit, public-private partnership to allocate public and private funds towards high-potential sustainable aerospace technology projects.
• INSAT’s targeted innovation areas include aircraft electrification, electric- and hybrid-electric propulsion, sustainable energy and fuels, hydrogen, batteries, advanced materials, and AI, all of which offer crossovers to adjacent sectors such as transportation, energy, and IT.
• INSAT proposes a total public/private funding of $850 million over 8 years, of which $350 million is public funding through Canada’s Strategic Innovation Fund.
