⚾ To be honest, I felt this as a new business owner... so many balls in the air and I wanted to catch... every. single. one. of. them.... and from every position on the field.

⚾ Because I had been for so long... I was every player... I was THE PLAYER.

⚾ But I knew that if I just took some of the ball caps off it would be easier to rock the cap & position that worked the best for me...

⚾ Once I decided to focus on my strengths and play on the strengths of my team members, we started to win. Not only did we win clients, but I also won back my sanity.

I had an exit interview for a client's employee who was resigning and got a new role with a little more money, a little closer to home, and a little different scope of work.

But when I asked the employee when they started looking for a new role, the answer was… after one year. Why? Because a whole year had gone by and nobody formally met with her about her performance or goals.

She didn't know her manager had already done the documentation for her next goal setting and development conversation, and her salary review was going to happen in a few weeks.

Also, her supervisor was going on a leave of absence, and she was potentially next in line to take on that interim contract role.

The difference between a satisfied and a dissatisfied employee? Communication.

The onus of communication is on the sender, not on the receiver. In business, there's always an opportunity to improve communication, especially with our team members.

Taking the initiative to have quality conversations before the exit interview would have saved a great employee from starting the process of looking for a new role. Wondering what questions can get you the inside scoop?

Have you ever stopped and considered what motivates YOU?

We like to assume that money is the top motivator, For some people it is.

But assuming all people are motivated by money, would be a bit of a lazy assumption on our part. Yes, money does factor into the whole equation. But it goes deeper than that.

Feeling appreciated within your role, feeling seen, and knowing you're impacting the business as a whole has held alot of weight on the intrinsic motivation scale of individuals.

🤔What can you do to help your team feel appreciated? Are they're inspired by gifts?
🤔Do they like to feel like you know what they're doing and realize their impact?
🤔A staff email to tell about an individual success?
🤔Or just ask them how you can help if their workload is extra heavy?

Money isn't everything for everyone. Each person is unique and finding out what makes them tick is your job as an effective leader.
