The most effective organizations deliver with incredible pace and precision, with almost effortless coordination. They make it look easy. All the pieces work in unison towards a common goal. Every component has its purpose, which it knows with clarity. Each purpose supports the next. It's almost as if high performing organizations are living beings. As a leader, wouldn't it be nice if there was a map to creating high performing teams and organizations?...

The roadmap for creating high performing teams and organizations by following the "living being" characteristics model.

I had a LinkedIn post recommended to me that talked about the pilot who took the time to show their face and introduce themselves to the passengers. The result was a feeling of trust and safety for this passenger. But I think the author of the post assigns too much value to the "face" and not enough to what was behind the pilot's approach. It was the authenticity of the approach that created meaning....

How to create trust? For one person it was a pilot that showed a face, but I believe it is the authenticity behind the voice that matters.

It's been a minute. I can't believe it's almost 4 years since I took the time to write. I can't even put my finger on why I stopped. Probably something else I can attribute to the pandemic. Or laziness. Or maybe just a general lack of self-care. But I can tell you... I've missed it. And it's time to come up for air....

Here are this month's upcoming Leadership Books. More to add to your .

COMPANY vision statements have been a key tool for leaders over the past several decades, but the traditional vison statement does not connect with the wave of new workers. Further, when asked, many senior leaders struggle to remember their organization’s vision.

I had some people reach out to me yesterday asking how, as white people, they can be the type of ally that is required in these times. I have to confess I don't have the answers to that - I am relying on my black friends and colleagues to help me to understand it. This feels like a good starting point.

LinkedIn’s senior global program manager of diversity, inclusion, and belonging says, “Standing in the gap means to speak up and speak out, particularly into the spaces where I/we cannot reach. Moreover, it’s a commitment to sticking with it over time.”

- Time to Listen. Please share with me your stories of how racism has touched your life. I want to be a better ally. I want to learn. I want to listen. Please share

Today I want to hear stories from those who have experienced racism in their lives. I want to understand how to be a better ally.

The COVID pandemic has forced many companies to think differently about their business. In some cases entire business models have been wiped out or changed drastically. In other industries the innovation has been around "client treatment".

This is a great example of one of those "client treatment" innovations where Ford was able to sanitize police vehicles between shifts in only 15 minutes using nothing but the car heater and a software patch. Great thinking!

A software update allows Ford police SUVs to sterilize themselves.

I Don't Know... But Let's Figure It Out!

If there ever was a time for leaders to realize the power of “I Don’t Know” it would have to be during a global pandemic! So often leaders believe they have to be the ones with the answers, but the reality is actually very different. Your team isn’t looking for you to have all the […]

The past four weeks have been incredible on so many levels. The world has effectively shut down the global economy. Travel has stopped. People around the world are staying indoors and social distancing. Thousands and thousands of people are dying. The news is filled with sad stories, big numbers, graphs, and doom and gloom. But in Canada we have found a way to use this time to pull together. [ 629 more words ]

When we come out of this COVID lockdown (at some point... who knows when) we will be coming out into some form of "new normal". Things won't be the same as before we locked down. Customer demand and behaviours will have changed. Employee behaviours will have changed. So as a business leader you have to be prepared to adapt your strategy to be successful in the new reality.

This is a great piece from the MIT Sloan Management Review that gives you a framework to do some of the thinking now on how you need to adapt.

Amid pandemic-driven market changes, opportunities await organizations that proactively adjust their business strategies.

Leadership in a time of Crisis - my personal experiences over the last week in dealing with the emerging situation.

I had a family vacation planned for March break 2020 to Florida. It was a Christmas gift to my children from their grandparents and they were excited. A day at Disney World, a day at the Kennedy Space Center, and maybe even some fishing in the Gulf! And then the world changed… and we adapted. …

The world lost one of the best Innovation thinkers yesterday. I was lucky enough to see him speak once in Florida, and he had an incredible mind.

Our economy will be shaped for years to come by his theories on innovation including his work in The Innovator's Dilemma and his more recent work on the "jobs to be done".

RIP Clay

Clayton Christensen, a longtime professor at Harvard Business School who became famous worldwide after authoring the best-selling business book, "The Innovator's Dilemma: When New Technologies Cause Great Firms to Fail," passed away last night. The Deseret News reported earlier today
