Wait - it's only March...why am I posting about wildfires?

Because this season is looking to possibly be one of the longest and most challenging seasons in recent memory. The lack of snow cover accompanied by higher temperatures means that this season is going to start earlier and fires are going to burn hotter and longer.

I strongly recommend the Center for Disaster Philanthropy for regular coverage of the wildfire season and other disasters around the world. I used to do some research and writing for them, and they are a thought leader in disaster philanthropy, recovery, and general disaster awareness.

Basic daily communication like this serves a number of purposes:

1) It informs the public that what they're seeing is planned and controlled.
2) It helps residents understand that their fire department is working hard to stay current and to be able to respond to the hazards in their area.
3) It helps keep timely and relevant information visible on social media by encouraging people to interact with it and share it.
4) It normalizes communications from emergency response organizations so people are more likely to seek them out for timely, accurate, and relevant information.
