The hands behind the forest of tomorrow 🙌

Meet Ester, one of the amazing Woodlands staff at our Juniper Tree Nursery! đŸŒ±

She has been a part of the team for seven years and plays a role in every step of the seedling journey. Right now, Ester’s helping thin this year’s seedlings to give each one the space it needs to grow up strong.

For Ester the most rewarding part is simple:
“My favorite part of my role would probably be seeing the trees from start to finish, knowing we were involved in growing them from seeds, right until they’re ready to be loaded up, taken out to the woods, and planted”.

We’re grateful for the care and pride Ester brings to growing the forests of tomorrow! đŸŒČ💚

Baby Moose on the Move đŸ«Ž

Moose calves enter the world ready to grow fast.

In May and June, cows give birth in secluded areas, often near water or thick cover.

A newborn calf weighs about 30 pounds—and within just a few hours, it’s already standing.

Within a few weeks, that wobbly little calf can run faster than you. đŸƒâ€âžĄïž

And they don't take long to bulk up - gaining up to 1-5 pounds a day in those early months.đŸ’Ș

Most cows have one or two calves, and twins aren’t uncommon.

Thanks to one of foresters for sharing these special moments from the forest.

🎉 Congratulations, Rick Fowler!

After 45 years with Irving, Rick Fowler retired on May 29—marking an incredible career built on hard work, reliability, and pride in the job. Rick held a variety of roles over the years, finishing his career as a Trucking Supervisor with Maine Woodlands.

Outside of work, Rick has been just as committed to his community—volunteering with the Can-Am Dog Sled Races, the Mapleton Parade, and serving as ‘King Lion’ (President) of the Mapleton Lions Club.

🙌 Thank you, Rick, for everything you’ve given over the years—on the job and in the community. Wishing you all the best in retirement!

đŸŒ± What are we growing—and why only that?

At our Juniper Nursery, we grow six species of spruce and pine—but not because they’re the only trees that matter.

After harvest, every area is renewed:
đŸŒČ some by planting
🌳 some by natural regeneration
✅ 100% of the land is reforested

Hardwoods, like maple and birch, don’t need our help to grow - they regenerate naturally very well. But we do put extra care into growing and planting softwood seedlings to help forests regrow faster to support sustainable forestry.

We plant them back into areas where there was already softwood—helping maintain the natural balance of forest types across the landscape.

That’s how forests continue to grow—for today and for future generations.

Late night snacking. Forest edition. đŸŒ™đŸ«Ž

This is what going to the fridge for a late-night snack looks like when you're a Moose.

To support their size, an adult moose can eat over 50 pounds of food a day, spending hours browsing through twigs, leaves, shrubs, and aquatic plants. During the summer, moose are more active at dusk and dawn when cooler temperatures make moving and eating easier.

👋Meet Our Nature Park Supervisor: Annie

Since joining us in April, Annie has already fallen in love with the Irving Nature Park—and all 600 acres of its protected ecosystems.

With a background in marine biology and a passion for birdwatching and hiking, Annie is a natural fit for our beautiful seaside park. And when she's not in uniform, there’s a good chance Annie is still out on the trails, enjoying everything nature has to offer.

In her short time here, Annie has already connected with many wonderful park visitors. She’s also been getting to know the Park’s wildlife (camera in hand 📾), so be sure to follow along with the Irving Nature Park to see what she discovers.

Come visit us in Sant John, NB. And if you see Annie around the Park, don’t be shy—stop and say hello!

đŸŒ± Outgrowing the greenhouse – over 10 MILLION tiny moves.

It’s a big day for these little seedlings. After spending their first few months growing strong inside the greenhouse, they’re making their first big move—out into the outdoors.

Our seedlings, planted in late February, are now about 12 cm tall and ready for the next stage of their journey to our outdoor holding areas.

The scale of this transition is just as impressive as the milestone itself. Each greenhouse holds:
🌿 28,080 seedling trays
🌿 468 pallets
🌿 1.8 million trees

It takes 5 days to fill a greenhouse—but 2 days empty it.

And as one group of seedlings moves out, a new group of freshly seeded trays move in to begin their own journey. Over the next 4-5 weeks, all six greenhouses will be emptied and refilled.

Because in sustainable forestry,
growing never stops.đŸŒČ

One of the forest's best disappearing acts! 🐆

Our trail cam near Saint George, New Brunswick, nearly missed this lynx slipping through the brush. Even on camera, their spotted coat and quiet movements make them hard to see.

If you spotted it on the first watch, you've got sharp eyes. đŸ‘€đŸŸ

Whatever the weather this long weekend—it’s growing weather in here. đŸŒ±

As we head into the long weekend—and hopefully some warm, sunny weather—our seedlings are getting exactly what they need to keep growing strong.

đŸŒĄïžInside the greenhouse, temperatures are maintained around 22°C.

💩Watering is carefully managed based on conditions outside. During our cooler, cloudier spring, it might be once a week. But when the sun and heat show up, it can be every day.

Soon, the seedlings will be graduating to the outdoors—where they’ll face the elements on their own. But for this long weekend, they’ll relax inside, under the careful watch of our nursery team.

Enjoy your weekend! ☀

Just outside Boiestown, this 100-foot cascade is New Brunswick’s highest continually running waterfall—and well worth the trip.
