Lakeland Backcountry Canoe Circuit

What could a few days beyond the road look like?

This Friday, we’re featuring the Lakeland Backcountry Canoe Circuit, where Jackson, Kinnaird, Blackett and McGuffin lakes form a 38-kilometre journey through Lakeland Provincial Park. The main circuit takes approximately three days, combining lake paddling, overland portages and backcountry camping.

Picture packing your canoe instead of your calendar. Sharing the work of a portage. Finding your rhythm on the water. Settling into camp with the kind of tired that comes from a day well spent outdoors.

Recent improvements have refreshed important parts of the experience, including two connecting portages, the Isthmus Bridge and selected backcountry campgrounds. Alberta Parks reports that the refurbishment project is complete.

Campsites are first come, first served, so preparation and flexibility are part of the adventure. Bring what you need, use designated sites and pack out everything you bring in.

WEDNESDAY OPERATOR FEATURE 🌲
Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park Tipis

Sometimes, where you stay becomes part of the adventure.

This Wednesday, we’re putting the spotlight on the lakefront tipis at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. Set on Long Island in Lac La Biche, they bring together the feeling of camping with a few comforts that make settling in a little easier.

Each tipi accommodates four people, with raised beds, mattresses, electricity and access to a private bathroom and equipped cookhouse. Outside, a barbecue, picnic table and firepit make room for shared meals and unhurried evenings.

Bring your food, bedding and the people you’ve been meaning to spend more time with. Picture coffee by the lake, a walk through the trees and time together without much of a schedule.

The tipis have wrapped up for the season, but this is one for next summer’s list. 💚

This Monday we’re heading to the Cold Lake area to feature Hamilton House Inn & Adventures, a family-run Lakelands tourism operator that has been welcoming guests for more than 25 years. Hamilton House

Located near Cherry Grove, Hamilton House combines the comforts of a country B&B with a surprising amount of outdoor adventure. Guests can stay in themed rooms, bring an RV or head across the private lake to a remote cabin tucked into the boreal forest.

Depending on the season, days can include canoeing, hiking, biking, fishing charters on Cold Lake, wildlife watching or cross-country skiing along approximately 14 km of groomed trails.

The Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair kicks off at 4 p.m. around the Complex and Kin Park. Come for the entertainment, food trucks, Pumpkin Showcase Market and the excitement of opening night.

This is just the beginning. The fair continues through Sunday, October 4, with the giant pumpkin weigh-off on Saturday. Make a weekend of it!

Five kilometres west of Smoky Lake, Serben Farms offers an authentic taste of agriculture in Alberta’s Lakeland.

This small family farm uses traditional outdoor farming practices to raise hogs and laying hens while working with neighbouring producers to offer even more locally grown and made food.

The team completes its own butchery, sausage-making, curing and smoking inside its on-farm shop. The result is an impressive selection of handcrafted sausages, bacon, hams, smoked meats, burgers and farm-fresh cuts.

But don’t stop there. The farm store is also filled with fresh eggs, local dairy and cheeses, seasonal vegetables, jams, pickles, homemade baking, meat pies and Ukrainian favourites—including perogies, cabbage rolls, nalesnyky and borscht.

Travel Lakeland Destination Management Organization is Seeking a
Temporary Accounting / Bookkeeping Position

St. Paul, Alberta | Approximately 1 Month | $30/hour
We are seeking an experienced accounting/bookkeeping professional with strong SAGE skills for a temporary position of approximately one month (up to 35 hours per week / approximately 150 hours).
The successful candidate will be responsible for entering annual accounting records for three organizations and establishing the systems needed for ongoing financial administration.
Responsibilities include:
• Entering annual accounting transactions and records for three organizations into SAGE
• Setting up budgets in SAGE for each organization
• Setting up recurring invoicing
• Setting up and organizing projects in SAGE
• Reviewing records for accuracy and completeness
• Organizing accounting documentation and files
• Other related bookkeeping and accounting tasks as required
The ideal candidate will have:
• Strong, hands-on experience with SAGE accounting software
• Previous bookkeeping/accounting experience
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
• The ability to work independently and manage confidential financial information
• Experience working with multiple organizations or entities would be an asset

The position will be primarily based in our St. Paul office, although a remote work arrangement may be possible after following an initial period of in-office work. Where company records or documents are taken off-site, the successful candidate will be responsible for their secure handling and timely return.
Compensation: $30.00 per hour
Term: Approximately 1 month / up to 150 hours
Location: St. Paul, Alberta
Potential for longer-term employment: Depending on organizational needs and the success of the initial assignment, there may be an opportunity for this position to develop into a full-time position after the first quarter of 2027.
