Some sponsorships are just business. This one is personal.

ANR is proud to support the St. Stephen High School grad banner project every year because investing in this community and the people in it matters to us.

But this year is extra special. One of those banners belongs to Claire Rideout, Class of 2026 and we couldn't be more proud.

Watching you grow up and now seeing your face hanging on King Street, gown and all, is one of those moments that reminds us why we do what we do.

Congratulations, Claire. The whole ANR family is so proud of you. ๐ŸŽ“โœจ

Most people know OAS gets clawed back. Most people don't know what it actually costs.

The clawback starts at $93,454. For every dollar above that, you lose 15 cents of OAS. By $152,062, it's gone entirely and it doesn't just reduce your cheque. That 15% recovery tax stacks on top of your marginal rate. On those dollars, you're not in a 40% bracket. You're in a 53% bracket.

For a retired couple with RRIF draws stacking on top of CPP and OAS, this isn't a worst-case scenario. It's the default when nobody planned the sequence.
The window to fix it was earlier. Before everything stacked. That's what we covered last week. Still in the feed if you missed it.

If any of this sounds familiar, the ANR team is glad to run the numbers for your situation.

The most valuable planning window most retirees never use.

It's the years between when you stop working and when the mandatory draws begin.
If you retire at 62 and defer CPP to 70, you have a window. RRIF minimums haven't started yet. OAS isn't in payment. Your income is lower than it will ever be again in retirement. That window is the single best opportunity to move money from the wrong accounts to the right ones.

Here's what that can look like in practice.

Your RRSP balance is sitting there, growing tax-deferred. But every dollar that stays in there becomes a mandatory RRIF withdrawal later, drawn at whatever rate CRA decides, stacked on top of CPP and OAS, at whatever tax bracket that creates.
In your early retirement window, your marginal rate might be 20%. In your mid-70s, with everything stacking, it might be 40%. Same dollar. Very different result depending on when it moves.

Strategic RRSP draws or conversions to TFSA during low-income years can permanently reduce the size of the problem. You're not avoiding tax. You're choosing when to pay it and at what rate.

Most people don't do this because nobody told them to. Their advisor had them defer everything. Defer CPP. Let the RRSP grow. Don't touch anything until you have to.
That advice isn't wrong on its own. But it ignores the sequencing opportunity sitting right in front of them.

The window closes. CPP starts. OAS starts. RRIF kicks in and now every move you make is defensive instead of strategic.

The time to plan retirement income isn't at retirement. It's in the years before the clawback becomes inevitable.

Next Sunday, what the OAS clawback actually costs, and why the number surprises most people.

Retirement income mistakes usually aren't about how much you have. They're about the order you draw it in.

Here's a scenario that happens more often than it should.
A retiree has CPP in payment. OAS started at 65. A RRIF running at mandatory minimums. Some investment income on the side. Each piece looks fine on its own.

But together, the income stacks. And suddenly they're over the OAS threshold without ever intending to be.

The RRIF minimum isn't optional, CRA sets it, and it increases every year. By your mid-70s, you're pulling significant income whether you need it or not. Add CPP. Add OAS. Add investment returns. Now you're over $93,454 and the clawback kicks in.
Nobody planned for that. It just happened.

This is a sequencing problem, not a savings problem. The right question isn't "how much do you have?" It's "which accounts do you draw from, in what order, so your income stays where you want it?"

Most people never get that question asked.

The Downtown St. Stephen BIA is proud to shine a spotlight on ANR Chartered Professional Accountants P.C. Inc.

Jason Rideout built ANR around one conviction: that business owners, non-profits, and individuals deserve more than compliance work.

ANR operates differently than a traditional accounting firm. They sit beside their clients and advise them on the issues that matter most: the decisions that shape their business, their financial future, and their legacy. Their work is designed to help business owners gain control of their business, build stability, and create the freedom to focus on what matters most, including actually accessing the wealth and the time to do what matters most to them.

The ANR team works alongside business owners at every stage, from structuring operations and protecting estates, to building long-term strategies that make the business worth owning in the first place. ANR also provides estate planning and assists executors through one of the most important and complex responsibilities a person can be asked to carry.

The team includes Ashley, Vicki, Kayla, Melly, Katherine, Tammy, Sean, and Tammy and they are growing! ANR will be welcoming a new receptionist to the team in July.

And exciting news, ANR has recently launched ANR Wealth, a strategic partnership led by Stacy Arseneault, bringing integrated wealth advisory directly to the business owners ANR already serves.

One team. One strategy. Your goals.

๐Ÿ“Find them at 123 Milltown Blvd and let the team at ANR show you what advisory build for businesses that really last.

We are proud to celebrate businesses like ANR that continue to support our community. โค๏ธ

Most Canadians don't know OAS can be taken back.

Old Age Security is a monthly federal benefit most Canadians receive starting at age 65. In 2025, that's roughly $727/month.

But if your income in retirement goes above $93,454 in a year, CRA starts clawing it back, 15 cents for every dollar above that line. By around $151,000 in income, it's gone completely.

Here's where people get surprised.

In retirement, income adds up fast. A RRIF withdrawal. CPP. Maybe some rental income or investment dividends. Each one seems manageable on its own. But they stack and a lot of retirees cross that threshold without realizing it until they file their taxes.

When that happens, you're paying income tax on that money and losing OAS on top of it.

Two tax hits on the same dollar.

The good news for most people, this is preventable. It just has to be planned before it shows up on your return.

Over the next few Sundays we'll walk through how.

You are welcome!

Most business owners we sit down with have an accountant, a financial advisor, and insurance in place.

But when we ask one simple question: "what does your actual plan look like?" Things usually get quiet. Not because they haven't worked hard. Not because they don't have good people around them.

Because nobody has ever pulled it all together into one clear picture.

That's what Stacy wrote about this week and if you own a business or know someone who does, it's worth five minutes of your time.
