Ashley Fox Studio

Ashley Fox Studio modern quilts + handcrafted textile goods Sewing started for me as something very practical. My passion for sewing started when I was expecting my daughter.

I wanted to be able to do some hemming and maybe make the occasional gift. I was interested in the various things I could make on my own, personalized just the way I wanted them. First it was curtains for the nursery, then a quilt, then a play mat, and then I was hooked. Working with textiles is so inspiring to me because of the way that fabric seems to hold memories and evoke feelings. Often, we

can think of a favourite item of clothing that reminds us of a special time, or a certain blanket that makes us feel at home when we wrap ourselves in it. I am inspired by the potential of my items for making and keeping memories, whether it is a new blanket for a baby, or a memory quilt made from the clothes of a loved one. I believe strongly in purposeful items. I use high-quality materials and construct things with great attention to detail so that they can be well loved and used. Practicality aside, I also find joy in using beautiful things. Finding just the right fabric and colour scheme for a design is so much fun. I want people to be able to truly enjoy my crafted items! Please message me for custom orders. I would love to work with you to craft and design something perfect just for you, your home, and loved ones.

Long time, no chat!

It has definitely been a year of less sewing, but I am grateful that my machine is always there waiting.

I’m currently teed up with these two projects: about to quilt a patchwork baby quilt and I have cut a Kristen quilt (pattern by Erica Jackman of Kitchen Table Quilting) from scraps.

I would definitely love to keep utilizing what I already have on hand, but I may need to stock up on some batting and notions to make it happen.

This quilt is just for meeee! My husband and I are pretty passionate about our native gardens here, so when Lindsey released the Everbloom pattern a few years ago, it immediately went on my to-make list. I even took my Kona card out to the yard to try to match the colours to the purple coneflowers (echinacea purpurea) in our yard. Things really came together when I found the beautiful Charley Harper print (Summer Vol. 2) with native plants that we grow! Can you spot the little monarch chrysalis in the foliage? Getting to sit under this beautiful quilt in the brown dead of winter brings me happy feelings about the lush summer garden. The background is Essex yarn-dyed in nutmeg, and the flowers and binding are all Kona. I did vary the centre of the coneflowers to try to capture the natural colour variation the blooms have (see last photo—up close, they’re a beautiful ombré).

Another quilt I finished in June 2023 (!) that hasn’t made it to the grid: the Patchwork Hearts Quilt by Emily Dennis of Quilty Love. This quilt is all lovely shades of pink and coral Ruby Star prints and basics, inspired by the cover version of the quilt. I know that Emily is gearing up for her annual Heart QAL right now. I’ve now made 2 of her heart quilt patterns (as gifts!) and they’ve both turned out so well. This particular pattern would be really fun and satisfying to do all in scraps!

Haven't posted in a long time, I know. Hi! I'm still here; still sewing albeit not as much in 2023 as previous years.
Sharing the finish of the Big Girl quilt for my youngest. I'm happy with how it turned out. Thankfully, she was patient as it wasn't finished until a couple of months past her birthday. This is the "Little Lights" quilt by Modernly Morgan, done in Sugar fabric (and the crown print is from the Reign line by Ruby Star Society). I did upsize the quilt to finish at 72" x 84", so it can be a bed size for her. The backing is a Carolina gingham (woven fabric, not a print), and it gave a lovely drape to the finished quilt.

Are you someone who goes all out for spooky season? (I am most definitely not 😂)

Have you seen the Spooky Season sampler happening on Instagram? 10 quilt designers have teamed up and are releasing a free spooky quilt block for the first 10 days of October--today is day 6, and this block called "Eerie Abode" was designed by my friend Tiffany of Village Bound Quilts. It is foundation paper pieced, which means you sew the fabric directly to paper templates and then remove the papers at the end. It results in very precise piecework (even better when you take the proper time to align the window panes, unlike myself...).

If you're interested in the sampler blocks, I will try to post a sign up link in the comments below!

Finally had the chance to get to know the pretty pink vintage Brother machine over this last weekend. I can see advantages (so fast and quiet, machine set into the table) and disadvantages (ergonomically not ideal, hinges stick up on the extension table and catch on the piecing as the quilt top grows in size).

This scrappy baby quilt will be going to welcome the great-granddaughter of this machine's original owner. 💕 It was a privilege to be able to gift this one!

I used Amy Smart's tutorial for an Irish Chain baby quilt (will link tutorial below in comments), but used various 2.5" strips and varied the placement for the "scrappy" look. A simple grid for quilting echoes the background fabric. It's always a pleasure to sew with the Ruby Star basics!

Had a bit of time to try to figure out this vintage Brother Super Streamliner today. It took a lot of fiddling with tension, but I think I’m underway!

Phew. Summer is chugging along and we are trying to make the most of it, which doesn’t leave much time for sewing.

Still here, though. No time for fancy photo ops. Making bits of progress where I can! I’m super thrilled with how this one is coming together (“Everbloom” pattern by Pen + Paper Patterns). Combining my love of native plants and quilts—colours picked right out of the gardens. This one will be just for ✨me✨

Got to start piecing on a brand new quilt project. It has been so long since I've started something new, and I've forgotten how good it feels.

To have more freedom to create more, I think I need to move out what's waiting for new homes here. To that end, all pieces in my "Available Items" photo album will be 40% off! Please send me a message if there is anything you're interested in.

Regarding pricing: I believe very strongly in valuing my time fairly. Making things isn't worth my time to only pay myself a few dollars per hour of labour. The list prices on these items reflect paying me a rate of $15/hour (which is now actually *under* the new Ontario minimum wage). Everything is priced as material costs + time, without an additional retail markup. Full disclosure, this 40% discount puts many items to just at or above the cost of materials alone--but I would really like to see these pieces in use rather than sitting stocked here. I know the cost of everything seems to be soaring these days, but I hope to keep folks aware of the true value of handmade items. 💕

LAST DAY FOR THE AUCTION! Bidding closes at 7pm this evening.

Currently, at the time of writing, this lovely quilt has a winning bid of $160. Will that be the lucky winner? Seems like a steal for a lovely handmade throw quilt...

I will link to the auction in the comments. Best of luck to all!
