How can we effectively protect the biodiversity of the Ottawa River?
By joining forces! 🤝 Our project in Kanesatake combines rigorous scientific approaches with the invaluable local knowledge of the Kanien'kehá.

Together, we are documenting ecosystem changes to better understand the impacts of marine transportation on our shorelines.

Special thanks to Marian MacNair et Valerie Gabriel.

🌎 Happy Earth Day!

Did you know that a natural site in Hudson was saved, in part, thanks to science?

Back in 2021, we had the privilege of conducting a biological study at Sandy Beach, a place full of life, from wetlands to forests to shoreline habitats. What we discovered was incredible: over 300 species, including 29 species at risk.

That research helped show just how special (and irreplaceable) this site is. Alongside an amazing community effort, it helped stop a development project and protect this landscape for the future.

Moments like this remind us that protecting nature is possible when people come together 💚

🎬 We even made a short film about this work back in 2021 (created by amazing summer interns!). If you’d like to see the site and the story, you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/4AkXnURGbAM?si=4_KDpaBeVgZPRP7u

Here’s to the places worth fighting for.
And to everyone who helps protect them.

The "Regional Assessment Capacity and Data Gathering with Mohawks of Kanesatake" project is reaching a pivotal milestone! 🌿

Funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), this project, made for Ratishontsanonhstats Kanesatake, Kanesatake Mohawks’ environment council, aims to understand how marine transportation and environmental changes impact our territory. From baseline data collection to identifying information gaps, we are working on 5 major lines of activity:

✅ Inventorying shoreline wildlife and plants.
✅ Identifying areas most impacted by shipping.
✅ Documenting local knowledge through "Kitchen Table Talks".
✅ Linking environmental health to the health of our community members.
✅ Building sustainable local expertise through training.

Together, we are creating a library of knowledge to protect our future and restore the balance of our ecosystems.

We are so pleased to welcome two amazing and talented interns / research assistants to the TerraHumana Solutions team!

Kamryn Mccallum recently completed her BSc at McGill University in the Environment program. With an academic background in environment and health, combined with experience working in community and student-led organizations, Kamryn has a growing interest in environmental sustainability and social justice. She joined TerraHumana Solutions to take part in working on the Kanesatake Regional Assessment Project as well as the Environmental Contaminants and Health Impact Study, which has been ongoing since 2019.

Chloé Vézina earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from McGill University and is currently pursuing a Master's of Environmental Assessment at Concordia University. She has experience interacting directly with communities through science workshops for children as well as working for a non-profit to carry out an educational campaign on the importance of composting. She is interested in leveraging environmental assessment processes to support communities, uphold Indigenous rights, and protect the environment. This internship is part of an ECO Canada employment program.

Losing Dr. Jane Goodall feels like losing a tether to hope.

In The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times, she wrote that death would be her “next great adventure.” We had the incredible fortune to see her speak in Montreal in 2023 — a moment that left us deeply inspired.

Dr. Goodall reminded us that hope isn’t passive. “Hope isn’t just wishful thinking,” she told The New York Times shortly after her 90th birthday. It’s something we must work for, nurture, and protect — with a little elbow grease... or as we like to say: with anything you can offer.

We’ll keep carrying that hope forward, in her spirit and with gratitude for all she taught us. 💚🌿

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡
September 30

On this day, we honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, and the families and Nations who continue to live with the impacts of colonial violence.

Reconciliation is not a single act—it is a commitment. A commitment to truth, to respect, to relationship-building, and to the centring of Indigenous voices and leadership.

At TerraHumana Solutions, we are deeply grateful for the trust and collaboration we’ve built over the years with the community of Kanesatake, where we continue to support projects focused on environmental contaminants and health impacts, as well as the protection of biodiversity and culturally significant species.

This work is rooted in partnership and guided by community priorities, knowledge, and stewardship of the land.

🧡 Today, and every day, we walk forward with humility, gratitude, and the responsibility to listen and act.

Every Child Matters.

Chaque enfant compte.

Honouring National Indigenous Peoples Day – With Ongoing Action

On June 21, we joined communities across the country in marking National Indigenous Peoples Day. While the day itself has passed, the work continues—and so does our commitment.

This summer marks the sixth season of contaminant sampling in Kanesatake, carried out in close collaboration with the community. These long-term efforts reflect both scientific inquiry and a deeper respect for the land and people whose territory we are on.

We were also honoured to take part in Kanesatake’s Family Day, where we shared stories, answered questions, and learned from community members of all ages. These moments of connection are just as important as the fieldwork—they remind us who we’re working for, and why.

Nia:wen to all those who stopped by and shared their time and thoughts with us.
