What is Sulfation in car batteries?
And how do I prevent it?

Answer:
Inside a car battery, normal use creates tiny lead sulfate crystals on the plates. When you drive the car or put it on a charger, those crystals dissolve and the battery stays strong.
Sulfation happens when the battery stays discharged (or only partially charged) for too long. Those soft crystals harden and grow bigger, like plaque on teeth. Once they get hard, they coat the battery plates and block them from working properly. The battery slowly loses its ability to hold a charge and deliver power.

Common ways it happens:

• Letting the vehicle sit for weeks or months without driving

• Lots of short trips where the battery never gets fully recharged

• Deep discharges (like leaving lights on or running it dead)

• A weak alternator that doesn’t charge it properly

• Hot weather (speeds it up)

• Just normal aging over time

I’m seeing news articles about wheels separating from vehicles after a seasonal wheel swap. It is very important that you get your wheels retorqued within 100-150 km of driving, after installation. Also, these are before and after pics of wheels I’ve installed, it is so important that the hub and the wheel (where it touches the hub) are properly cleaned before installing. Make sure whoever is installing your wheels, is doing this! 🛞

Please avoid Crawford St between Wellington St and Talfourd St while Sarnia Fire Rescue crews respond to a recycling truck fire. This is the third vehicle fire crews have extinguished in less than 48 hours. The cause has not yet been determined, but this serves as an important reminder to properly recycle batteries and battery-operated items.
