⚠️ Ontario’s carbon monoxide alarm requirements have changed. Is your home protected?

Carbon monoxide is invisible, odourless and potentially deadly. In fact, more than 65% of carbon monoxide related injuries and deaths in Ontario occur in the home.

As of January 1, 2026, Ontario has expanded its carbon monoxide alarm requirements for existing homes.

If your home has a fuel burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage, CO alarms are required adjacent to sleeping areas and now on every storey of the home, including levels without bedrooms.

Having the right detectors in the right locations is important. Having them connected to a monitored security system can provide another level of protection, especially if an alarm occurs when you are away or unable to respond.

🔥 Lithium ion battery fires are different. Do you know the warning signs?

For Fire Prevention Week, we are focusing on a growing fire risk found in almost every home and workplace: lithium ion batteries.

Phones, laptops, power tools, e bikes, scooters and even vehicles rely on lithium ion batteries. If one becomes damaged, overheated or improperly charged, it can enter thermal runaway, a rapid, self sustaining reaction that can produce intense heat, fire and hazardous smoke.

A few important precautions:

• Use only manufacturer approved chargers and charging equipment.
• Never charge devices on beds, couches or other soft, combustible surfaces.
• Stop using batteries that are swollen, damaged, unusually hot, leaking, smoking or giving off an unusual smell.
• Be especially cautious when charging larger batteries such as e bikes, scooters and power tools.
• Never place lithium ion batteries in household garbage or regular recycling.
• If a lithium ion battery begins smoking or burning, get out, stay out and call 911. Do not breathe the smoke or fumes.

Early warning matters. Smoke and heat detection in garages and other charging areas can provide valuable notification before a developing fire spreads.
