If you have ever wondered what actually happens from a tax perspective after someone passes away, this episode is for you!

Have you ever noticed that on the first page of your tax return, you are required to state your "marital status"?

Here's what each box means:

MARRIED: means that you have a spouse. This term only applies to a person you are legally married to.

COMMON LAW: Living common-law means that you are living in a conjugal relationship with a person who is not your married spouse and at least one of the following conditions applies:
(1) This person has been living with you in a conjugal relationship for at least 12 continuous months
OR
(2) This person is the parent of your child by birth or adoption, this person has custody and control of your child and your child is wholly dependent on this person for support

SEPARATED: means that you have been living apart from your spouse or common-law partner because of a breakdown in the relationship for a period of at least 90 days.

WIDOWED: means that you had a spouse or common-law partner who is now deceased.

DIVORCED: means that you are legally divorced from your former spouse.

SINGLE: means that none of the other marital statuses applies to you.

Remember that a change in marital status can impact your tax filing position. Check out my posts from earlier in February 2025 to learn more!

Hi! It's been awhile since I have popped on here to introduce myself:

⭐ My name is Amanda. My middle names are "Starr Anne". According to my Mom, I am named after a baby that was left on the steps of a church across the street from where my parents were living in Hamilton, Ontario.

⚖ I am a tax lawyer, and partner at a law firm in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

📚 I am a voracious reader, and after all the years of combing through mountains of documents at work, I have an uncanny ability to read and comprehend large amounts of material really quickly.

👩‍🍳 In addition to loving the practice of tax law, I also love to be in the kitchen... and I am toying about doing a video series of "Cooking with the Tax Chick".... stay tuned!

🎙 I have a podcast (The Tax Chick Podcast) and a website (www.thetaxchick.ca) aimed at providing information about Canadian taxes to business owners and advisors.

✈ In addition to sharing tax information, I also love to share my favorite restaurants and experiences from my travels.

🏀 My husband, Craig, also makes an appearance in my posts - he creates the music for the intro/outro in my podcast, and has also shared his love of the NBA with me
