While it is early in the New Year 2023 we first want to wish everyone a Happy Healthy Prosperous new year!
While it is also early in the new year I have already received important documents from 2022 that will be needed for tax filing and would like to remind yourselves of some of the required documented information.
Business Owners and employees working from home please be reminded that certain information, documents, and statements are required to calculate eligible expenses that can be deducted from income.
To start do be sure to record your current odometer reading on your vehicle if you used your vehicle for business purposes in 2022. The starting odometer reading a year ago subtracted from the current odometer reading today will provide the total kms driven in 2022. The recorded log of business trips will determine the total kms driven for business or employment income. In order to deduct your fuel, insurance, interest on loans, and maintenance receipts as vehicle expenses the 2022 total kms driven and 2022 business kms driven is required.
For those using their home to operate a business or earn employment income other annual amounts from 2022 are required such as mortgage interest dollar amount paid in 2022, utilities for heat, power, internet, insurance, maintenance, and mobile phone bill totals. Those total expenses are based on the % of your home used for earning income therefore do measure work at home area and the total area of your home so we know what % of your home is used for business.
Although tax filing is still several weeks or months away like me some of these documents like mortgage and car loan statements have already arrived to my email which led me to publish this reminder for myself and for those able to deduct home office and vehicle expenses from their income.
For those that have relocated and still wish to use our tax services and can deduct moving expenses please gather up moving expense receipts such as fuel, meals, moving company receipts, along with the kms from old home to new home with addresses…address of new workplace and dates moved and dates starting new job.
For those that need help filing their 2022 PST we are glad to assist. To avoid late filing and interest charges that has to filed by January 20th through the mail or January 31st if filing through SETS (Saskatchewan electronic tax system).
For those wanting to save some taxes by RRSP contributions do know you have 60 more days to contribute towards your 2022 tax deduction and if you aren’t sure how much your limit is, or how much to contribute to avoid having to pay unpaid tax let us know we too can help you with that.
January and February does require gathering some information, but it’s all worth to save taxes on income, and January too have some expected benefit payment dates upcoming. GST quarterly payment should arrive January 5, and the quarterly Climate Action Incentive payments should arrive on January 13th.
Again, Happy New Year and do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or require more information.
