Rock beats scissors ✊🏼✌🏼 And sometimes, taking action beats waiting for the “perfect moment”

I’ve noticed something about us moms. We’re REALLY good at making things happen for everyone else. But when it comes to something we want for ourselves? We can find a million reasons to wait.

What will others think?
When life slows down.
When there’s more money in the bank.
When we have more time.

But let me ask you something...

What’s actually going to be different in January than it is right now in October?🤔

Will your schedule magically clear up? Will your responsibilities disappear? Or will another three months pass with you still thinking about the same thing? I’m thinking it’s probably going to be the latter… look at your previous 3 months for evidence.

You can love your life, adore your babies, and still want to build something that’s YOURS.

And taking action doesn’t mean quitting your job tomorrow or turning your life upside down. It can start with one conversation, one question, or one small step in the margins of motherhood.

That’s exactly why I’m building my own middle option. A life where meaningful work, motherhood, and financial independence can coexist 🤎

First child energy is apparently spending an unreasonable number of hours handcrafting a Halloween costume for a tiny person who did not ask for it, will not remember it, and has a very real chance of being absolutely terrified of the finished product. 😂

Meanwhile I’m over here tracing, hot gluing, tweaking tiny details and convincing myself that yes, this part definitely matters… as if she’s going to inspect the craftsmanship before trick-or-treating. I can already picture her taking one look at it and deciding she’d actually prefer to go as herself.

I feel like this has to be some kind of firstborn rite of passage though?? You spend 14 business days creating their costume from scratch and by child #2 it’s probably more like you’re digging through a Rubbermaid bin on October 30th like, “perfect, you’re a pumpkin” 😂🎃

EI maternity/parental benefits are incredibly valuable!! Bbuuttt they still have an end date and only benefit you in the short term.
Let’s be real- those payments are barely making you by… if that.

Because there’s the immediate question of what your benefit payment looks like now…
and then there’s the bigger question waiting at the other end: What happens when that income stops but your desire for more flexibility doesn’t?

If you have business or self-employment income while receiving EI, it needs to be reported, and your benefits may be affected depending on the current rules and your circumstances. That’s something I always recommend confirming directly with Service Canada rather than relying on social media advice.

But the reason I kept building wasn’t because I thought I had found some EI loophole.

It was because I wanted to be creating something that could outlast the EI period itself.

This is something I could continue growing when maternity leave ended.
Something that might eventually make future work decisions feel less binary.
Something that could give our household another place for income to come from.
…and who knows maybe I would be in a position to take the full 18 months next time and reduce work hours following.

That long-term piece mattered more to me than any short-term calculation.

That’s a wrap on harvest from the garden 🪏👩🏼‍🌾

Carrots are up, potatoes are dug, hoses are put away for another season. It’s always a bit sad does this process but we are so grateful for the fresh produce our backyard has provided for us for yet another year.

Any suggestions on what to use all the potatoes for over the winter 😅 I’m sure there will be a lot of soups involved!

Has anyone ever made their own French fries & frozen them? If so, shoot me a message with your process! 🥔🍟

Today was one of those days when you call your mom for 40 minutes on your drive home to vent and cry😅 not kidding

As you have probably read or heard me say on here… I’m new back to work from maternity leave.
Although fighting the emotional side of only seeing my daughter for 2 hours a day is a whole other battle, can we just all talk about how fricken hard it is mentally to go back to work after singing nothing but Old McDonald for 15 months!!!
Don’t get me wrong I am excited to use my brain again, be helping people, and having more adult interactions but the degree of Imposter Syndrome I am having right now has me feeling that I am way in over my head.

Aaahhh… anyways…. As my mom told me on the drive home “I am in a new area of growth and I don’t know everything YET”

There’s something uncomfortable about realizing that “playing it safe” doesn’t actually guarantee anything. That Jim Carrey quote got me thinking about how many times I’ve held myself back simply because I couldn’t see the whole path yet- I didn’t know how it would work, what the next steps were, or whether I’d be good at it.

Sometimes the familiar option feels like the responsible one just because it’s familiar. But I’m learning that “I don’t know how yet” doesn’t have to mean “no.” You don’t need the entire plan figured out before taking one step toward something you actually want.

So now I’m curious- what’s something you’ve held yourself back from because you couldn’t see exactly how it would work out? 👇🏼

There’s something really satisfying about seeing one of these notifications pop up in the middle of an otherwise completely normal bedtime routine.

Not because it means I’ve “made it.”

Not because one deposit magically changes everything.

But because it’s a reminder that the small but consistent efforts I have made throughout my day are making a difference. Most of the work I’ve put into this business hasn’t happened in these big, impressive stretches of time.

It’s happened in the margins.

During naps.
After bedtime.
With a cold coffee beside me.
While supper is cooking.
In the little pockets of a day that already feels full.

And when you’re building something that way, it can be really easy to wonder if those little bits of effort are actually adding up to anything.

Then a notification like this pops up.

Not because of something huge I did today, but because of all those small, consistent things I’ve kept doing along the way.

That’s the part I want other moms to see.

You don’t necessarily need hours and hours of uninterrupted time to start building something for yourself.

Sometimes it’s 20 minutes here.
A post there.
Following up with someone while the baby plays beside you.
Learning something new after everyone else has gone to bed.

And little by little, those margins can start producing something tangible.

Maybe it’s extra grocery money.
A bill covered.
A contribution to savings.
Or another small step toward having more choice over how you spend your time.

Tonight, this notification was a pretty sweet reminder that the work happening quietly in the margins still counts🤍

For a long time, I thought becoming a mom would make the answer obvious.

Either I would be excited to return to my career full-time, or I would realize that staying home was exactly what I wanted.

Instead, motherhood made me realize how much I value both.

I’m proud of the career I’ve built. I’m excited about the work I get to do as an Occupational Therapist, and I still want that part of myself.

I also want slow mornings with my daughter. I want to hear those little feet coming down the hall, be there for the ordinary moments and have more than a rushed couple of hours together at the end of the day.

And financially, I want to contribute to our family and help create the life we’re working toward.

For a while, it felt like wanting all of that meant I was asking for something that didn’t really exist yet.

Maybe the problem was believing those were the only options available.

That’s why I started building an income of my own in the margins of motherhood. Not because I have every step figured out but because I want to create the possibility of eventually working fewer hours without giving up meaningful work or the income our family relies on.

My middle option won’t happen overnight. Right now, it looks like using small pockets of time to build something that could give our family more choices later.

And if you’ve been feeling caught between being the mom you want to be and contributing in the way you want to contribute, perhaps you aren’t meant to squeeze yourself into either box either.

Maybe you’re meant to build your own version of the middle 🤍
