Micro cultivation applicants have the option of growing their 2100 square feet of canopy indoors, outdoors, or in a greenhouse. Contrary to popular belief, all of these options are actually viable in Saskatchewan

Indoor requires significant capital, as you obviously need a building. Though renovating an old space is possible, with the work required to meet Health Canada’s standards it is usually advisable to build or purchase a new building. Indoor offers the advantage of year-round production in a climate controlled environment, however the trade off is a much higher electric bill

Though we generally have less than 100 frost-free days in Saskatchewan, we have more sunshine than most other parts of the country, which makes growing a crop of autoflowering cannabis very profitable considering the minimum start up costs required. Health Canada requires a fence and a secure storage shed, which isn’t very expensive compared to an indoor grow. The trade off is getting only 1, maybe 2 crops, and a lower price for the product as it will likely be edible or extract grade. Since they already have the space and infrastructure required, outdoor cultivation is a great option for conventional farmers or market gardeners looking to diversify and add a profitable supplemental crop to their operation.

Greenhouse is the best of both worlds in many ways. It allows for the low operating costs of outdoor, while creating a product that rivals indoor quality. Greenhouses can be anything from a cheap PVC hoop house designed to simply keep the dust off of an outdoor grow, to multi-million dollar year round structures that offer supplemental heat, lighting, and full environmental control. Building a greenhouse also offers outdoor growers the option to grow regular photoperiod strains using light deprivation
