If your business has more than one location and you hire low-wage workers through the LMIA process, this August 2026 change is directly relevant to you.

ESDC changed how the low-wage worker cap is calculated. Previously the cap was applied across your entire company. Now it is calculated per individual work location.

Here is what that means in practice. If you run two locations in Sault Ste. Marie, each location now has its own cap calculation rather than the two being combined into one company-wide total. A business that previously hit its company-wide cap can now hire additional low-wage workers at locations that have remaining capacity under the new per-location formula.

For small and medium-sized businesses in Northern Ontario with multiple sites including retail operations, food producers, hospitality businesses, and manufacturers, this change could meaningfully expand your ability to bring in the international workers you need.

If you were previously told you had reached your company-wide low-wage cap, that calculation needs to be revisited under the new rules.

Tag your HR manager or business partner who handles hiring. This could change what you thought was possible.

A quiet but genuinely helpful change just landed for Canadian employers hiring through the LMIA process.

Effective August 2026, IRCC extended the work permit grace period for workers with a pending LMIA from 60 days to 90 days. This means if a worker's current permit expires while their LMIA-backed work permit application is still being processed, they now have 30 extra days before their authorized status becomes a compliance issue.

For employers managing tight timelines, complex hiring processes, or workers transitioning between permits, that 30-day extension is meaningful protection against accidental gaps in work authorization.

If you are a Northern Ontario employer hiring international workers, this change could directly affect your hiring timeline and compliance planning.

This is one of the most significant LMIA changes of 2026 and it directly affects how quickly you need to move once your application is approved.

ESDC has halved the validity period of an approved LMIA from 12 months to 6 months. Previously when you received a positive LMIA you had up to a year to bring your worker to Canada and have their work permit issued. That window is now six months.

What this means practically: once your LMIA is approved the clock is ticking twice as fast. Your worker needs to apply for their work permit, receive approval, and arrive in Canada within that six-month window. Any delays in document collection, medical examinations, or work permit processing could put you at risk of the LMIA expiring before your worker arrives.

For Northern Ontario employers this makes preparation before the LMIA is even submitted more important than ever. Have your worker's documents ready. Know your timeline. Do not wait until the LMIA arrives to start preparing.

iCA Immigration and Talent Services has been nominated for a 2026 Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre Innovation Award and iCA could not be more proud.

Jennifer Johnson, RCIC has a message for anyone sitting on the sidelines of Express Entry right now.

Canada set a target of 380,000 new permanent residents for 2026. 64 percent of those spots fall under the economic category which includes Express Entry. The summer draws were strong but the early months of the year were slower. That means Canada may need to make up ground in the final quarter of 2026 with more frequent and larger draws to hit its annual target.

If you are Express Entry eligible and you do not have a profile yet, you could be missing exactly that window.

A CRS score of 480 feels low when you compare it to general CEC draws sitting above 500. But category-based draws for French language, healthcare, transport, and senior managers have been cutting as low as 382 this year. Your 480 may already qualify you for a category draw you have not even explored.

Jennifer's advice is simple. Stop waiting for a perfect score. Make your profile. Get in the pool. Let the system work for you.

Sault College offers Welding, Heavy Equipment Operator training, Electrical apprenticeship preparation, and Industrial Mechanic Millwright programs.
